There’s a big difference between routinely drawing down the number of active warheads (some of which are apparently nearing 40 years old) and proposing that we “end production of fissile material for weapons, agree not to build new weapons and remove any remaining nuclear weapons from hair-trigger alert.” Taken as a whole, that would pretty much hand the initiative to countries who don’t care about international agreements, which historically speaking would be pretty much everyone but us. I’m sure up-and-coming nuclear powers like Iran and North Korea would be forever deterred by disapproving frowns, backed up by our fearsome arsenal of untargeted antique missiles.

Maybe Obama is counting on the elusive Kryptonian vote. There aren’t a lot of them, but you don’t want to piss them off.

Reading Obama’s statement (still waiting on the text of the entire speech), I’m reminded of Bush’s second inaugural address…and Peggy Noonan’s observation of it. You remember Bush’s speech, right?

It is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in the world.

Noonan:

Ending tyranny in the world? Well that’s an ambition, and if you’re going to have an ambition it might as well be a big one. But this declaration, which is not wrong by any means, seemed to me to land somewhere between dreamy and disturbing. Tyranny is a very bad thing and quite wicked, but one doesn’t expect we’re going to eradicate it any time soon. Again, this is not heaven, it’s earth.

Now, you can blow off Peggy Noonan for all I care. But let’s not excoriate politicians who dare to aim high.
