On the way back from filing from papers in the Southern District of New York at Foley Square, I took a picture I’ve meant to take for years.

Dog day
Posted by Ron Coleman on January 28, 2008
Actually it was a pleasant day in court. There is nothing as brilliant, really, as the express subway trains. When these things are cooking, you own the City. So I got from Midtown to the federal courthouse in Brooklyn this morning in no time flat — quite welcome after the nightmare of sitting in interminable Lincoln Tunnel bus lane traffic on the way into the City in the first place.
The new courthouse building at Cadman Plaza is positively brilliant. We were asked to check in at chambers prior to this conference and, the main lobby of each chamber has glass walls. And I was struck as I walked past this one by the extraordinary view across the East River out the window — which you can’t see because of the glare in this drawing (no cameras are allowed in court, but I draw real good).
But as I was sketching away imagine my surprise at seeing the full extent of court personnel in this particular judge’s sanctuary! Yes, in the bottom-right-hand corner — it’s a dog. First judicial dog I have ever encountered… with fur, anyway. He stood still while I sketched away. Good dog!

And another thing

Why would you want to leave the thanking of paying customers to… your garbage receptacle?
Even if you’re going to thank them yourself, as they did in this restaurant tonight after I scarfed down my lonely slices of kosher pizza, why would you want the garbage pail to even be engaging your clients on the gratitude plane?
I like a nice clean garbage can that doesn’t try to insinuate itself into any of my emotional matrices, okay?

Escalator down – 42nd Street
Posted by Ron Coleman on January 23, 2008
I am not anywhere near the bottom of the laziness curve. But what possible justification is there for a person who is not an invalid or otherwise unable to move for standing still on a down escalator?

You must stop and look at this mural, of which the photo is just a detail, next time you are near Radio City Music Hall. It’s got all sorts of edifying stuff going on.

Ms’ing a clue
Posted by Casey Tompkins on January 15, 2008
Ron recently commented on Ms. Magazine’s recent bone-headed refusal to run an ad describing three of the women who help run Israel. You’d think feminists would get all worked up over that kind of real-world “girl power.”
Since the wyminists over at Ms. seem to have trouble with the concept, I would like to present Girls Women from the IDF. Completely work-safe, unless your boss is offended by beautiful women in uniform, with guns.
Me, I think I fell in love a couple of dozen times…

There’s no limit on what the light does in this part of town, but, you know, you have to see it.

The Belated Party – Jerome Thompson
Posted by Ron Coleman on January 14, 2008
There is something depressing about this time of day in general. This awe-inspiring painting, which I photographed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brings up a mix of melancholy feelings despite the presentation of nature’s magnificence.
