War is peace

Posted by Ron Coleman on August 1, 2007

Obama:

“He [President Bush] confuses our mission,” Obama said, then he spread responsibility to lawmakers like Clinton who voted for the invasion. “By refusing to end the war in Iraq, President Bush is giving the terrorists what they really want …”

I mean, some people will say anything, no matter how preposterous. Does this require real analysis to demonstrate its fatuity?

UPDATE:  Actually, I’m coming to understand Obama the Unready‘s foreign policy stragety better and better.

Yes, please. I’d like to read your opinion on what Obama had to say.

  2. When Bush took resources from the war against bin Laden and put them into the War against Saddam, he gave the terrorists what they want. We are distracted by irrelevancies and unable to prevent ourselves or our allies from being attacked. Meanwhile, our troops are at the far end of their supply lines in a hostile, foreign country where everything we do breeds resentment and helps the terrorists recruit new members…

But you think “real analysis” will prove this wrong. Let’s see it…

If “what they really want” is an Islamic caliphate and Sharia law (and some of them HAVE said that’s what they want), then Bush is absolutely NOT giving them what they really want.

If “what they really want” is a guaranteed passage to Paradise (with the possibility of 72 virgins thrown in), then Bush just may be giving them what they really want.

  4. Bin Ladin is dead; prove me wrong. If you mean the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, tell me — which resources not made available there would have resulted in a prevention of further terrorists attacks against the U.S. following 9/11?

    Oh, never mind.

You’re behind the curve on what’s happening militarily and culturally in Iraq, Andrew. Even the leftist press is ahead of you now.

But you think the terrorists will be disappointed and let down if we withdraw from Iraq now, eh? You believe that what they really want is for us to stay — that’s why they keep killing so many Iraqis. So we’ll stay. They’re happy we’re there. Not that they’re in any way connected with the terrorists in Afghanistan, anyway.

Yes, I think that is the dumbest thing I’ve heard all month.

    Are you counting Obama too?
Cause if you are then are you grading on a curve?

  6. You can look at it as their being tied for first, Jack.

And yet more of them (including OBL et. al.) have said they want more, much much more. And they’ve gotten it, courtesy of this administration:

[B]y refusing the end the war in Iraq, President Bush is giving the terrorists what they really want, and what the Congress voted to give then in 2002: a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.

Fact is, Bush needs bin Laden as much as bin Laden needs Bush. Bush needs perpetual war in order to justify grabbing extra-constitutional powers; bin Laden needs Bush in order to further inflame the radical Muslims world.

    Ron:

Bin Ladin is dead; prove me wrong.

If I didn’t know you better, I’d say you were being serious. But maybe you should drop the sarcasm for a moment and get serious. Tell me what you really think.

If you mean the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, tell me — which resources not made available there would have resulted in a prevention of further terrorists attacks against the U.S. following 9/11?

Our armed services have been nearly broken by the Iraq war. That’s common knowledge among everyone except those who are defending the president at all costs.

You’re behind the curve on what’s happening militarily and culturally in Iraq…Even the leftist press is ahead of you now.

Ron, now I really can’t tell if you’re being serious or just … bizarre. What are you talking about?

BAGHDAD – Baghdad shook with bombings and political upheaval Wednesday as the largest Sunni Arab bloc quit the government and a suicide attacker blew up his fuel tanker in one of several attacks that claimed 142 lives nationwide.

The sad fact is, we’re damned if we stay and damned if we go.

Bottom line: Bush apparently believes that there are two things that will somehow salvage his legacy: total victory in Iraq, or another massive terrorist attack on US soil. Problem is, he probably can’t tell the difference between the two.

Obama needs only to be Obama to attract his target groups of voters. No revelation of his fundamental confusion can affect them.

Come on, man. You can say the same thing about any of the candidates during this election cycle (or any recent election cycle, for that matter).

I still haven’t heard anything substantive about where or why he’s wrong. Or as Ron put it, “a real analysis that demonstrates his fatuity.”

    Yes, and pretty sad, huh?

However, some partisans have stumbled upon candidates with something like a coherent position.

  11. I am serious. Osama is quite dead.
