The holidays are over

Posted by Casey Tompkins on January 9, 2008

Thank goodness!

I would like to extend my apologies to Likelihood readers for the recent hiatus. Ron made a very kind and generous offer to allow me to post here; I published a grand announcement, then I “went black” for the past two weeks.

My only excuse/reason is that Monday (Jan 7) was the first day off I’ve had since Christmas Day, and I’m bloody fried. I observed the 7th by completely vegging out. Had a six-pack, watched a movie, then crashed. Didn’t even do the laundry.

I should have at least put up a “blogging will be light for the next XX days” post, and for that I apologize to Ron and Likelihood readers.

The magnificent seven

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 6, 2008

I try not to cross-post with LIKELIHOOD OF CONFUSION® too often, but this seemed like a good general topic even though it’s “blawgy,” and increasingly the audience for the two blogs doesn’t really intersect:

I hadn’t picked up on this — as part of its “ABA 100” story, the ABA Journal published brief profiles of the seven “revolutionaries” of law blogging, as they see it:

All good choices. One thing I find noteworthy: Only one of them (Goldstein) works for a major law firm (though probably most or many of them have, at one time or another). I wish I had the time to run down the whole ABA 100. I suspect the big firms are way under-represented, especially considering the obsession with Big Law at publications such as American Lawyer.

Why? It’s not just because running a good legal blog is time-consuming. It’s because blogging well on a real topic requires independence of mind, a distinct style, strong opinions and willingness to stick out — not a good combination at all for success in institutional corporate law firms. Believe me.

Succesful launch!

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 29, 2007

I’ve convinced Casey Tompkins, who has maintained the Gantry Launchpad (a Large Mammal!) blog since 2004, to contribute to this blog, now that he’s once again up to posting regularly.

Why? Because I need help keeping the momentum up. And he’s good! He’s wrong on some things, too, so that will make me look even better. And he’s a lot better with a slide-rule than I am.

I think I get a mazal tov.

“The silent majority”

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 26, 2007

Another “best of the year” post.

A little bloggerly introspection about one blogger’s insatiable need for connection — and, at the original post, some good comments! — from April, and a photo I took almost exactly a year ago and which I still love-love-love:

I am constantly impressed at the phenomenon of lurking on email lists times-square-skyline.jpgand the roughly equivalent one of reading blogs without commenting. I realize that in fact most people do these things and do not contribute to discussions. It was the same in school; most people do not wish to speak up in class. Yet here you can do so anonymously. There is no grading. Still you remain, mostly, silent. And what I crave is your society. Connection.

You demur. I wish I had an ounce of that humility (others also wish I did). But the one thing I couldn’t stand in the old newsprint days was that They, by virtue of having a printing press, could say, and I had to just read.

Today was a good day for a humble blog — no, I’m no Ali Eteraz! — with about 700 unique readers. I got about 40 comments, also a lot, but it was from about 15 people. That ratio amazes me. You can say what you think! You can disagree with the writer! You can agree with the writer!

“Nope. No thanks, just looking. Go on.”

I guess it takes all kinds… mostly the other kind, in fact.

Big hairy thing

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 25, 2007

The Truth Laid Bear is a quirky ursine, but for what’s it worth he has us down as a Large Mammal in his Ecosystem these days. Considering that we haven’t had an Instalanche in a while, that suggests that this blog is starting to get a little traction. That’s gratifying for a blog started less than a year ago by someone a little less photogenic than Michelle Malkin.

UPDATE: Never mind!

Can you see the real me?

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 25, 2007

img00131.jpgI guess I have to admit that I am basically a blogger (i.e., a writer who could not get enough paying work) who supports his habit with a day job as a better than average lawyer. I mean, who am I kidding?

UPDATE:  Hmm!
