Down with me!

KNBC reports:

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez are among those expected to join immigrant-rights activists Thursday for a march and rally to denounce the actions of Los Angeles riot police at a May Day rally at MacArthur Park.

The debasement of politics, leadership, statesmanship:  Protest against your own administration!  Nothing is beyond the demagogue.

What a … riot.

Not supposed to happen

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 17, 2007

Yikes!

A 15-foot pipe fell off a skyscraper being dismantled near the World Trade Center site and plunged through the roof of a nearby firehouse Thursday, injuring two firefighters, officials said.

That is not supposed to happen!  Walking around New York City, there is construction and demolition going on everywhere, all the time.  We walk under gigantic pieces of airborne building materials, members, massive appliances suspended from cranes all day long.

Now you’re going to tell me, “Whoops”?

This sort of undermines an urban compact.  No excuse!

So very unhappy

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 16, 2007

nosegay.jpgMy Way News reports a high school student who sued after being disciplined by her school and then mercilessly teased for using the phrase “That’s so gay” is not entitled to monetary damages:

“All of us have probably felt at some time that we were unfairly punished by a callous teacher, or picked on and teased by boorish and uncaring bullies,” [J]udge [Elaine Rushing] wrote in a 20-page ruling. “Unfortunately, this is part of what teenagers endure in becoming adults.”

The law “is simply too crude and imprecise an instrument to satisfactorily soothe deeply hurt feelings,” Rushing said.

She speaks wisely, does Judge Rushing. Now, this:

The case filed by Rice and her parents in 2003 brought widespread attention to a three-word phrase that some teenagers use to mean “stupid” or “uncool,” but has come under attack as an insensitive insult to gay people.

That one was just floating over the plate for me. I was going to write that well, I’m a pretty gay guy, and I wasn’t insulted. My little noodge on the usurpation of the word gay by an interest group, see.

But then I realized, I’m not very gay at all, am I, actually?

The USSR and the Six Day War

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 16, 2007

The Jerusalem Post reports:

In a new book that “totally contradicts everything that has been accepted to this day” about the Six Day War, two Israeli authors claim that the conflict was deliberately engineered by the Soviet Union to create the conditions in which Israel’s nuclear program could be destroyed.Having received information about Israel’s progress towards nuclear arms, the Soviets aimed to draw Israel into a confrontation in which their counterstrike would include a joint Egyptian-Soviet bombing of the reactor at Dimona. They had also geared up for a naval landing on Israel’s beaches.

This is really hard to believe, but the authors claim to have first-hand testimony from former Soviet officers and officials as well as documentary evidence.

Could the Soviets have thought this would not have resulted in a U.S. response?  I am sure it’s addressed in the book, though it is not in the Jerusalem Post article.  Perhaps they thought Vietnam was too big of a distraction, and that a swift victory by their side would make it a fait accompli.   Perhaps Brezhnev was sloshed.  It’s a chilling thought, though.

Fred Thompson, damn it

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 16, 2007

Two things. Maybe three:

  1. The good thing about being obscure is you can change your find and pretty much no one will call you on it. (That is another version of pretty much no one will care, true, but every blog is a vanity project, at the end of the day, isn’t it?)
  2. Does this mean Instapundit is part of the Fred campaign? Hard to get much more front-and-center on an endorsement than embedding a campaign video on that blog.
  3. If you’re not up to date on the facts about Fred Thompson, click here.

Okay, and as to number one? I still like Rudy. But I am convinced there is so much animosity toward his pro-abortion position that he cannot get the nomination.

UPDATE:  “Who do you think the Left fears most?”

59th Street Bridge with yacht

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 14, 2007

59th Street Bridge with yacht
It was perfect weather in Manhattan and during the late afternoon I had to slip out and decompress along the East River around 51st Street, where there’s a pedestrian bridge that goes over a local “dog park” and over the FDR Drive to a set of benches on the water.

The brackish water does me a lot of good, and whiile it’s not exactly quiet, the white noise generated by the passing cars on the FDR — punctuated by booming renditions of urban Top 40 — will, if you are a city mouse, substitute quite nicely for silence.

All and all a bracing diversion just a few blocks from the office.
