Down with me!
Posted by Ron Coleman on May 17, 2007
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez are among those expected to join immigrant-rights activists Thursday for a march and rally to denounce the actions of Los Angeles riot police at a May Day rally at MacArthur Park.
The debasement of politics, leadership, statesmanship: Protest against your own administration! Nothing is beyond the demagogue.
What a … riot.

Politics ain’t beanbag.
P.S. Why do you find it unusual that the Mayor and the Police Chief might be at loggerheads?
Ron Coleman said
My post wasn’t about their being at loggerheads.

What a weasel phrase for our time—immigrant rights!
The illegals have one right, to a speedy trial.

Bob,
The pinheads don’t get the fact that no one is against immigration. It’s all about following the rules, playing fair.
That they cast it as an “Immigration” issue means that they know full well the holes in their arguments, and need to gloss over the true subject, to obfuscate the issue in order to gain support.
It’s like going to a bar or club. To get in, you have to stand in line and pay the cover charge. The club also has a dress code and a behaviour code. If you can’t measure up, you don’t get in. Simple as that.
What we really need is a stroger rope line at the door and more bouncers.

No, actually it’s not like that at all.
If anything, it is the exact opposite. Remember, the Declaration says we (all men, not just US citizens) have certain inalienable rights.
The club analogy doesn’t work. Please try again.

I’m sorry I misunderstood, but I thought this is what the post was about:

What did I miss??

Ara,
Ummm… regardless of what the declaration says, the Constitution is the working document here, and it says that WE THE PEOPLE get to say who comes in and who doesn’t. It does not give every tom dick and manuel the right to cross our border at will, avail themselves of tax-payer funded assistance, under-bid citizens for jobs and then breed children in a shameful attempt to remain here.
The LAWS of the UNITED STATES set out plainly who is eligible to enter the country and under what conditions. It sets out the paperwork and fees required, the documentation needed, and so forth.
This country should adopt a policy of establishing detention centers within every reasonable geographic location, then begin a vigorous round up of ALL illegals, transportation to the nearest detention facility, then expidited deportation to their country of origin.
The fees for all of these operation should be billed to the alien’s country of origin, and, if not paid in a reasonable time frame, deducted from whatever foreign assistance we give that nation.
Immigrants are always welcome in America. Immigrants, that is, who are willing to play by the rules, understand the meaning of fair play, and understand the difference between secular laws and religious laws. Most importantly, they need to be able to assimilate themselves into America’s culture.
Anything else, Ara, is just weasly mouth-drivel word play, and, honestly, I had thought better of you.

You thought better of me? I’m flattered.
Seriously, go read the US Constitution. Pull it up in a browser so all the text is in one window and then search for the word “citizen.” You might be surprised at what you find.
I’ll summarize:
Almost all the citations are for “citizens of the states.” (Article III, Section 2; Article IV Section 2; Amendment 11). Many others are in reference to the requirements to hold elective office.
And then there is the 14th amendment. It says that people who are born in the United States are considered citizens.
The End.
So are you telling me that you, a Republican, are going to tear families apart to accomplish your immigration reform?
THIS I’ve got to see.
Bottom line: get real.

Ara,
I fail to see how, if argued in court, a child born in the United States to parents who are here illegally, can lawfully be granted citizenship.
All courts routinely hold that evidence, regardles of it’s validity to the case in question, cannot be presented if it was obtained through illegal methods. It’s referred to as “Fruit of the Poisoned Tree”.
Having a child in the United States as a means to be able to stay here is no different than a drug dealer seeking to use his illegally obtained capital to pay his attorney.
The law is only valid when both sides abide by it. One cannot use an illegal act to gain a legal advantage.
If you flout the law, you forfeit all rights to it’s protection.
I truly believe that if the United States asked the citizens for assistance in identifying illegals, then there would be a massive show of support, and the problem could be dealt with in very little time.
Round up the illegals. Deport the illegals. Secure the border. protect our national interests.
And who said I was a Republican?

Perhaps the Federal government will sue to overturn the citizenship status of untold millions of Americans. Stranger things have happened…especially in this administration.
In the meantime, I guess we found the one thing Republicans feel more strongly about than family — and it is Mexicans.
P.S. Not that you would be a Republican, of course. There ARE no Republicans left, eh?
:^)

Well, a lot of us Cubans are Republicans, and you know, if God hadn’t invented Mexicans, we would have.
