The law won’t protect you

kojak2.jpgThe worst case scenario came true in Cheshire, Connecticut, a suburb of 29,000 people near Waterbury. A home invasion — the whole thing. I won’t repeat the details, but they’re as bad as any TV cop show writer could come up with.

The criminals, who had long (though non-violent) records, were out on parol. The law failed this family.

And how does a family protect itself? Was this family too stupid to call the police? Obviously not. There are some circumstances where the police can’t help. A home invasion is frequently one of them. How are intelligent people in a wealthy Connecticut suburb reacting? The way Mike Bloomberg would like them to — by reacting to a failure of the criminal justice system by investing more of their well being and peace of mind in that system? No:

The owner of a local gun store said more people are also signing up for gun-safety classes so they can buy firearms.

The law can’t always protect us. Sometimes it barely even tries. It’s a dangerous world, God help us; and surely we must help ourselves.
