NAACP going to the dogs?

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 30, 2007

“NAACP Leaders Urge Fairness for Vick,” it says.  After all, Michael Vick is black.  In case you were wondering what accusations of promoting dogfighting have to do with the Advancement of Colored People.  I assume his co-defendant, Tony Taylor, who just copped a plea (so they say), is against the Advancement of Colored People.

But this “fairness” stuff seems to go very far:

Georgia NAACP President Edward Dubose thanked Vick for his community service and the money and excitement he has brought to Georgia as a Falcon. Dubose said Vick is being prosecuted in the court of public opinion before he has had a chance to defend himself.

“We’re not condemning bad behavior, but Michael Vick is innocent until proven guilty,” Dubose said.

“Not condemning bad behavior”?  What exactly are we condemning, then?

Ooops. That link didn’t quite work out right.

For full effect (weak though it may be), click on the “1942 Film” link at the site above, then click on “cat people” in the text.

So we’re too dumb to know about “innocent until proven guilty” unless an organization that used to advance civil rights tells us about it?

Evidently, Dubose meant “condoning” and not “condemning”. Either way, the NAACP’s likely motivation was to get its much-diminished self some publicity.
