Moses and Queens County, New York

Mosaic Law mural, Queens Supreme court

A rather odd juxtaposition, but give them credit for aspiration.

The courthouse was built during the LaGuardia Administration. Old Fiorello was, of course, famously “on the side of the angels.”

It’s a New York thing

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 19, 2007

Glenn links to Michelle, who reports that the Senate has killed a legislative provision granting immunity from lawsuits against members of the public for reporting suspicious behavior that may lead to a terrorist attack — the “John Doe” amendment.

It’s not an obvious policy one way or the other. The possibility for abuse is clear.

But for some reason, according to the reports linked to above the people behind this legislative shift have chosen to obscure their identities. Why?

By the way, if you’re not from around here, here’s the original:

It’s kind of ubiquitous in these parts.

UPDATE: More proposed graphics, in the classic mode, from Gateway Pundit.

Grand Central by day

I took this picture of the interior of Grand Central Station a couple of weeks ago. Thank God, as bad as the steam pipe explosion was, it could have been immensely worse. If I told you that such a thing would happen at such a time and such a place, you’d ask me how many dozen were killed, I think.

It is small potatoes in comparison, but can I say, I am also glad nothing happened to New York City’s last, grandest room?

No congestion pricing

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 17, 2007

Mike loses a big one:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg conceded failure Tuesday on his controversial plan to reduce traffic by charging drivers extra fees to enter Manhattan’s most congested neighborhoods. A day earlier, the plan had collapsed in the state Capitol.

I think that’s a shame.  This fee would have been a big burden for a lot of people, and a small burden for me.  But something has to give with traffic in New York, and I was interested in seeing how this class microeconomics-driven solution would have worked.  I would like to think that Milton Friedman could have pulled some strings from the Other Side; but then again, as a cursed libertarian I cannot vouch from which side of the Other Side he’s on.

Too bad.  Maybe some more manageable, or even a governable, major city will try this in the U.S.

I actually think the irony of this storefront was lost on the owner. It was, after all, Coney Island Avenue.

This is where you get off and on the train if you’re going to the New York County Supreme Court or the Southern District of New York federal courthouse. So it’s the subway station most likely to have people with big square briefcases waiting in it.

Trial Term Part 15

Trial Term Part 15

I settled a case in this courtroom a week ago today. We weren’t trying it here — it was adjacent to where the hearing was supposed to be, it was vacant, and the judge of the house was happy to literally lend us his good offices.

This is the courthouse that’s always featured on Law and Order. The federal court is right next door, and in fact, having more business in the latter, I frequently find myself walking past or, if the cameras aren’t rolling, through setups for filming in Foley Square. They love those famous long, long steps in front of the courthouses.

When I’m in court that’s when I feel as if my life is a television show, and in a good way.

Not supposed to happen

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 17, 2007

Yikes!

A 15-foot pipe fell off a skyscraper being dismantled near the World Trade Center site and plunged through the roof of a nearby firehouse Thursday, injuring two firefighters, officials said.

That is not supposed to happen!  Walking around New York City, there is construction and demolition going on everywhere, all the time.  We walk under gigantic pieces of airborne building materials, members, massive appliances suspended from cranes all day long.

Now you’re going to tell me, “Whoops”?

This sort of undermines an urban compact.  No excuse!
