The libertarian moment?

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 11, 2009

Glenn Reynolds points to Reason TV and “Why you’re living in the libertarian moment. ….”

I’ve suggested otherwise more than once, unless by “moment” we mean a passing pulse of time — then, perhaps, that’s about right.

But libertarianism is neither the default position of human affairs, nor, as an all-encompassing program, is it practical, sustainable or moral.  Read my post here and perhaps you will want to engage on this issue.  For even if this is that moment; and even if it is a longer moment than some of us would want, as of right now libertarianism isn’t even getting pushback from the non-evangelical traditional Right.

Well, that’s not right!

In a strange land

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 19, 2009

David Kelsey explains how out of synch the mainstream Jewish organizational elite is from any conception of what is really in America’s best interests.

That’s all of America. Of which some people seem to forget they are part.

Who are you to say?

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 17, 2009

Not good for the resume:

Police say an upstate New York television executive who sought to improve the image of Muslims in the media beheaded his wife after she filed for divorce.

I’m not judging.  I’m just saying that, given his interests career-wise, this does not seem like the move.

The witch is back

Every blogger who cares about free speech should add this to his sidebar (click it, it links):

(Yeah, it should be “Do you know listen, or have ever listened,” but, you know.)

It’s that time of day

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 4, 2009

Yes, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and it’s that time of day of the United Nations — actually describing objective facts related to the Israeli-Arab conflict that depart from the “noble savages” script regarding Palestinians.  Get this:

Christopher Gunness, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said Hamas policemen broke into an aid warehouse in Gaza City on Tuesday evening and confiscated 3,500 blankets and more than 400 packages of food.

“They were armed, they seized this, they took it by force,” Gunness said, terming the seizure “absolutely unacceptable.” . . .

“Does anyone really think that the Americans, who are our single largest donor, or the Europeans, who are our largest multination donor, would give us aid in the generous way they do if they thought that aid would go to terrorists?” Gunness said.

Yeah, that’s right:  They also acknowledged an American contribution in a public statement.  This guy Gunness, I figure he’s on a bread line by the weekend, no?

And Hamas?  Same old, same old — classic fascist Big Lie speak:

The Hamas government demanded an “immediate apology” from the U.N. “for spreading false news,” Hamas spokesman Taher Nunu said.

Amazing.  Keep this up and even Jimmy Carter will be embarrassed by these guys!

“Creationist” reasoning on de Nile

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 26, 2009

The Jerusalem Post reports (via Insty) that special kind of reasoning — as you’ll see, it’s not all that novel, however:

Samir Faris, a retired governmental school principal whose living room contains a portrait of the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, whom he admires for his peace efforts, agreed that “Israel was lying” about the tunnels.

“If there were tunnels, then they were created after they initiated the blockade… only because [the Palestinians] need food and bread,” he said.

But when asked about Egyptian statements that tunnels existed even before Israel withdrew its soldiers from the Gaza Strip in 2005, Faris said that Palestinians collaborating with Israel had built the tunnels “to create chaos on the borders between Egypt and Israel so that the image of Egypt would be damaged in the eyes of the world.”

You know nothing

You know nothing

Sound familiar?  It’s a perfect twin of the commonly claimed argument of creationists that “God put fossils into the Earth during Creation to test our faith.” (I say “commonly claimed” because searching Google, I couldn’t actually find a text in which a creationist actually says that.  But everyone agrees that they (we) do.)

Same here:  The tunnels were put there to make it look like there were tunnels there, and thus to test the faith of Arabs, as well as Europeans and other liberals, in the childlike, benevolent innocence of Palestinians, wherever they be.

Dig?

Out of the closet, and still invisible

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 11, 2009

Rank antisemitism, of the “back into the ovens” variety, is now officially unremarkable in the streets of liberal Western democracies.

Give Glenn Reynolds credit:  Believe it or not, his running links to each publication of a column or blog item pointing out the gross Sturmer-ization of the world media about Israel — “It was the Zionists’ fault” and “The Oldest Hatred Lives” — make him almost unique among leading gentile commentators (UPDATE:  aha!!!) on this ugly reality.  Even then, Glenn links mainly to articles by people who either are obviously Jewish or have, well, Jewish names at least.

Well? Well?

Where on earth are all our non-Jewish friends from the Ivy League?  Where are those fellows we golf with so serenely in Westchester and Orange counties?  How about a word from that nice chap we have coffee with in the faculty lounge and has that gig on NPR?

I don’t mean evangelical Christians.  They’re good as gold on Israel, and on anti-semitism too.   Most politically conservative Christians are.  Jews can count on them for support at moments such as these.  Only Jews who are religiously insecure bristle at this friendship.

But right now, as thousands of anti-semites take to the streets — our streets — and so many among them express, without fear of any political or social consequence, the most virulent genocidal fantasies, where are those non-Jews who will show us why Israel is not right to curl up into a ball and say to itself and the world:   It’s true, no one else does care, there is no “Never Again,” there is only moral blackness and hate regarding the Jews, and for once and for all damn world opinion and let loose the real hell we still keep at bay?

It’s not a matter of agreeing with Israel’s policy.

It’s a matter of saying some ways of expressing disagreement are not acceptable here.

And that utilizing “those ways” — by invoking genocide favorably — tells us that opposition is not a matter of disagrement but of deep, vicious hatred?

Where are the fashionable non-Jewish voices who can always be counted on to condemn injustice, racism and genocide?

Where is the cream of the Democratic Party establishment, so gorged on Jewish liberal gelt, at this moment that so demands multicultural, multiracial condemnation?

Where is Obama?

UPDATE: It’s official: We’re there. Or, rather, we’re back. (Hat tip to Craig Karpel.)

Starvation for fun and profit

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 8, 2009

There’s so much so wrong here:buford_t_justice

U.S. District Judge U.W. Clemon had court security arrest Morgan County [Alabama] Sheriff Greg Bartlett after dramatic testimony from skinny prisoners about paper-thin bologna and cold grits. The hearing offered a rare look into Alabama’s unusual practice of letting sheriffs pocket money left over from feeding inmates.

The sheriff, who showed no emotion when his arrest was ordered, had testified that he legally kept as personal income about $212,000 over three years with surplus meal money but denied that inmates were improperly fed. . . .

Clemon said the Alabama law allowing sheriffs to take home surplus meal money is “probably unconstitutional” in certain cases, but his ruling was limited to the finding that the court order was violated. It didn’t address whether the law should be overturned.

“He makes money by failing to spend the allocated funds for food for inmates,” Clemon said. . . .

Sheriffs in 55 of Alabama’s 67 counties operate under the system allowing them to make money operating their jail kitchens. The law pays sheriffs $1.75 a day for each prisoner they house and lets the elected officers pocket any profit they can generate.

Come on.  What country was this really in?  Hey, do they mean Soviet Alabama?

Ron Paul: Every bit as bad as we thought

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 6, 2009

Ron Paul’s wickedness is not a big surprise — it was out there, as I told you, for anyone who wanted to know. But Cold Fury lays out Paul’s latest display of true, Jew-hating colors just so:

“Israel’s preemptive war.” “A few small missiles.” Palestinians “living in concentration camps.” America “rightfully to blame.” It’s all here in this rich, rich vein of vapid isolationism, utter stupidity, and contempt for the only functioning democracy in the Middle East . . .  The line between Left and Right isn’t straight; it’s circular, and the ends meet right smack between this moron’s ears.

No, it’s not “merely anti-Israel” — you can’t be that morally blind about Israel’s moral position in this situation and not be an antisemite; and given the track record, this is not exactly a new insight.  As blogger Rougman comments at the post, “I guess he doesn’t want to leave that Nazi vote on the table come 2012.”  They never do.

So what’s scarier — that this wretched gnome is member of Congress?  Or that so many people, otherwise capable of being taken seriously, were so seriously taken with Ron Paul?
