Fear this

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 4, 2008

Well tell you whats fair and balanced.

We'll tell you what's fair and balanced.

I have been writing consistently, stridently and at some cost to my frazzled nerves, based on the reactions, that fear-mongering by anti-Obama partisans is a mistake, is unwarranted, is irresponsible.  (UPDATE:  Not just me.)

But there is one thing I really do fear, and unlike socialism or any other bogeyman trotted out in this election, you need not look under the bed to find it:  It’s the Orwellian-named Fairness Doctrine.  And Democrats have unabashedly promised to bring it back via legislation.

This is a genuine threat to everything unless the Supreme Court either revisits is prior, wrong decisions upholding the Fairness Doctrine and rules, as it should, that it is unconstitutional.  The Internet helps, because it is an alternative medium — for now.  But the Fairness Doctrine is the scariest thing the Democrats are promising, and it makes anything else that you can imagine, or have imagined, and that the likes of me have poo-pooed, eminently possible.

So, yeah, on this I do say “be very scared.”

UPDATE: Maybe people are getting scared, finally.

What happened to the low riders?

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 4, 2008

Slate:

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has launched a “poll watching” campaign. According to President and Founder Chris Simcox, the organization is urging volunteers across the country to stand 75 to 100 feet outside polling stations with video cameras and to record any “suspicious activity” like “busloads of voters.” Volunteers will be documenting license plates as a “deterrence effect against people voting illegally.” The Hispanic National Bar Association has sent out a press release stating that the Minuteman campaign is “nothing more and nothing less than an effort to intimidate Hispanics and other minority voters on Election Day.”

Because Hispanics all take buses to vote?

Because someone writing down the license plates of the bus you took to the polling place affects you personally… how?

Help me out here.

It turns ugly

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 3, 2008

Not them, us.  This is the issue I’m going to ponder, right up front, during the cold nights of exile.

The majority of the comment section to a piece I wrote, and which was linked to by Instapundit last week, was so outrageous, insulting and over the top — as well as mainly utterly non-responsive to what I wrote — that I did something I never did before and just shut down comments.  I don’t mean people disagreed with me.  I mean that most of them were nuts,  or at best seriously misconstrued what I said and savaged me for it.  Others invented quotes by me or by Obama, and one accused me of “pandering” — pandering?  What’s the idea, that I think of myself as in line for the ambassadorship to Williamsburg?

The know-nothing Right is out there, reading, and it’s fair to say that while it’s usually been easy to link to Daily Kos and find stuff for the Left to be very embarrassed about, we have more than our share of dingbats, loonies and the tinfoil-hatted too.  (In fact I think we are the better off, for we are in fact embarrassed about it.)

I wouldn’t have even bothered to mention it… save for the fact that Glenn couldn’t resist sharing one of his own specimens of a the exact same species just now, too.

Glenn Reynolds and I are seldom mentioned in the same breath, but one thing you can say is that we are not ideological twins.  But we’re both pond scum to a certain sort of blog reader, and for the same reason:  We try, as many do, to focus opposition on legitimate issues, not demonization.

For some people that is just not enough.  What is to be done?

Last weekend’s Info-Me-Cials

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 2, 2008

I had originally only posted them only on Facebook, but then I figured, what the heck.  The damage is done, and with just a little effort I’m pretty sure I can deliver Florida with these.

Saturated

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 31, 2008

I really can’t wait for the election to be over, no matter how it comes out.  Everything is politics now.

I’m not even going to upload any more videos (hey, who’s cheering?!), at least on the blog.

I can’t stand the contentiousness, the polarization — it infects every online interaction.  One guy dropped into our alumni discussion group for attorneys and just said, hey, we need to win such-and-such state for Obama, contact me to volunteer.

Will it go away when the election is over?  Or will it just get worse?

Ron Coleman’s McCain Info-me-cials: #4 — Judge mental

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 31, 2008

It’s not just law professors or even lawyers thinking about this.  And it’s not entirely about Obama — after all, of all places he did teach at the University of Chicago, hardly a hotbed of lefty bomb-throwing on the the law faculty.

But when you look at that posse around him and all those JD’s… you just try and fall asleep!

(Besides, some journalism really does work better in pajamas!)

Ron Coleman’s McCain Info-me-cials: #3 — Barak and the Jews

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 30, 2008

We’ve been here before, and then some.  Now we’re back in multimedia!  Well, one medium.  Medium rare.

UPDATE:  Via Instapundit, Volokh links to an article in Haaretz that considers the issue of Jewish voting in this election somewhat more soberly.

Ron Coleman’s McCain Info-me-cials: #2 — Beyond weak on defense

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 30, 2008

Until we started winning the Iraq war, Democrats couldn’t wait to lose it, and hard.  Barack Obama was absolutely part of that.

Whether you believe he was merely posturing for the nomination, or that he is that contemptuous of both America’s ability to protect its interests and its troops as well as our intelligence, his stance on the Iraq war at its lowest point does not bespeak leadership.

Ron Coleman’s McCain Info-me-cials: #1 — Obama’s not ready

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 30, 2008

I blogged on why Obama is not ready to be President a while ago.  But here’s the sound and the splendor of it:
