Suspension of disbelief

Posted by Ron Coleman on June 15, 2008

It was okay when we tolerated movie musicals, but for “cautionary thrillers”? Uh uh:

Early on in “The Happening”, it becomes obvious that people are being affected by airborne toxins, yet no one in the movie even tries to cover their mouths with a shirt or something. They sell safety masks at CVS and at Home Depot. Wouldn’t that make a little more sense than trying to outrun the wind?

..and there are machines that can help us escape the bonds of earth and outrun the wind, called ‘airplanes’.

These cautionary thrillers can’t work unless they make the intended victims helpless prey, and in doing so they make people appear to be dumber than mice. Sure, these things would be a threat if people were that helpless, but they’re not, so what is the point?

Um, propaganda?

Which side are you on?

Posted by Ron Coleman on June 12, 2008

Bill Clinton still has the reflexes:

Bill Clinton on Tuesday canceled a commencement speech at the University of California, Los Angeles, because of a lingering labor dispute. . . .

(Click for a cool pink link)

“Due to the ongoing labor dispute, he regrets that he will be unable to participate in commencement this year and he wishes the UCLA graduates the best of luck,” Clinton’s office said a statement.

Being a Democrat still means, evidently, not caring about the merits of a “dispute.” Picket lines are not crossed because “labor” is presumptively on the side of the angels when it institutes an “action” against “management.”

How exactly is that “New Democrat”? True, here “management” is a publicly-funded university, which, unlike the auto industry, can be bled indefinitely for concessions. So I suppose there is, from a welfare-state point of view, no tipping point in this case: More is always available for the next contract, the public trough being bottomless.

But as a general proposition, when do Democrats, or anyone else, move past the concept that the mere declaration by union management leadership that a “labor dispute” exists establishes an irrebuttable presumption that labor is on the right side of that “dispute,” and is entitled to total deference — even to the extent of broaching a prior commitment? For we know how particular President Clinton is about his commitments.

Answer: This Old Left presumption will be challenged when union gelt and manpower, especially public employee union gelt and manpower, cease to be the single most important component of the Democratic Party coalition. In other words, not any time. Ever.

How hot is it?

Posted by Ron Coleman on June 8, 2008

Its 273 degrees in New York tonight. And it’s not just the heat. Maybe you’ve heard?

Hot night in June

Yeah! It’s the humidity! It really is!!

Good thing Con Ed was pumping a little more steam into the air around the East River.

Going a-courtin’

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 29, 2008

Special Civil Part courtroom, Essex County Hall of Records, Newark NJ

I know many of the legions of readers here keep score of this sort of thing.

Here goes: In the last month I have physically appeared in the state courts of New York (Kings, New York, and Richmond counties) and New Jersey (Essex County) as well as federal district courts in Arizona, New York (Eastern and Southern Districts) and New Jersey. Also a rabbinical arbitration in Manhattan (the Rabbinical Council of America’s Beth Din of America permits attorney representation) and, as mentioned earlier, a mediation in Miami more or less under the auspices of the federal court for the Southern District of Florida, too.

I think I am due for a new pair of shoes. And a nap.

By the way I can go to court for you, too. For money. Just to be really clear.

Grisly, what having a monkey on your back will do to you. No matter what kind, I guess.

Dean’s World: Lubavitcher Hasid takes over hopeless South Bronx public school as principal, and turns it around 180 degrees.

I am pretty impressed!

Taking the Iraq question seriously

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 17, 2008

Slate seems to actually be interested in discussing the question, rather than posturing about it:

To mark the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, Slate has asked a number of writers who originally supported the war to answer the question, “Why did we get it wrong?” We have invited contributions from the best-known “liberal hawks,” many of whom participated in two previous Slate debates about the war, the first before it began in fall of 2002, the second in early 2004. We will be publishing their responses through the week. Read the rest of the contributions.

The reaction to this should be interesting.

Holocaustism idiocy

“Ala. building can’t shake swastika shape”

From the ground, the Wesley Acres Methodist retirement home looks like any other building. But fly over in an airplane, and the outline is unmistakable: It’s one big swastika.

Prompted by complaints from a Jewish activist, the agency that owns the government-funded building is planning to alter its shape to disguise the Nazi symbol.

This is the most idiotic thing I have read in a while, and I do a lot of reading for someone who still moves his lips on the big words.

This is what a “Jewish activist” has to be “active” about? An efficiently designed building that invokes his or her superstitious emotions when viewed from the sky?!

Good things the Jews don’t have any real problems.

Oh, Kosovo!

This place has been a mess, by all indications, since the beginning of time.  This blog post at Chicago Boyz not only explains why, but demonstrates the “process” as well as you work your way through the comments!
