When I lived in Jersey City as a youth, around the 1960s, I loved to hop the subway and ride under the Hudson River to New York City. To me, then as now, New York City is Manhattan. Everything else might as well be on Mars, or Idaho.

When I returned in later life, I found the City at once exciting and overwhelming. I was thrilled to be there, and relieved to go home.

The History Channel is running a series called Cities of the Underworld. NYC was featured recently, with the merest glimpse into the vast excavations under the streets of the island.

Growing up in Brookly, we certainly felt part of New York City.
