THOUGHTS ON leaders as readers. “Is reading to pick out the parts that fit your pre-existing vision more impressive than reading to grasp the author’s vision?” Sounds like something a lawyer would do.

Well, not a good one.

Afternoon rays, D'Amato Courthouse, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York

If this were a photograph, it would be of the afternoon light  in a corridor at the Alfonse D’Amato Federal Courthouse in Central Islip, New York, taken during a recess in a trial I am involved in.

Drawing of me in old federal courthouse, Newark

Pencil sketch of your blogger in another courtroom at another time

Today was one long day of litigation in federal court in Long Island, New York. I don’t want to report anything in particular about it — too many sensitive issues still in the air for blogging during the trial.

It is exhausting, though. You really can’t have any idea unless you’ve ever litigated a multi-claim commercial and business tort case in a jury trial where you client has millions in exposure. But maybe some day I will try to convey it to you, now that’s I’ve done it several times, and all, and never had a client have to write a check after the jury came back. Just saying. And poo-poo-poo.

Did I mention exhausting? Draining? Enervating?

Yes… absolutely exhilarating!!!

The doctor’s daughter

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 8, 2009

Courthouse corridorHer father was not just a saint, but a doctor.  Not just a doctor, but a surgeon.

A heart surgeon.

And yes, a saint.  A humble heart surgeon.  We talked about him here, remember?

No son in law can match that.  And yet she said this, did Jane, a graduate of a better law school herself, a Jewish daughter of a Jewish heart surgeon saint, and it’s what I keep in my locket, or engraved on the inside of my pocket watch, or what have you — here’s what it was she said:

No matter what anyone says, at the end of the day you litigators are the surgeons.  Whatever everyone else is doing as a lawyer, getting up there and trying a case — that’s life-and-death surgery.

It is.  And I’m scrubbing.

Next week… the gas.

Sing, you dirty bird! Sing!

BLAGOJEVICH: “Vengeful and Profane.” Doesn’t sound like he’s going to get much support from the media, or fellow Democratic politicians.

Oh, but what “help” might he provide?

My first inclination was to think that perhaps we have here a new James Traficant!  Defiant and all.  But then I thought better of it, for if Mr. Fitzgerald the prosecutor has even half of what he claims he’s got on Blagojevich, the Illinois governor is very dead meat — but has far, far more to sell than Traficant ever did.

It seems likely that Blagojevich knows, well… everything about the seedy underside of Illinois politics.  Everything.

Did that link say “vengeful”?  This could be a very, very warm winter on the shores of Lake Michigan!

Don’t fear the reaper

Above the Law regarding massive layoffs at the Reed Smith law firm:

“Redundancy consultation exercise?” You have to love the British use of the English language.

I have other reasons for loving things like this, but yeah, I love that, too.

Existential angst for big law firms?

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 20, 2008

Or just some bad lobster?  Bruce McEwen asks, apropos “BigLaw” — the major law firms whose profitability and hourly rates seem always to be immune from economic reality:

If the US Treasury is a major stockholder in major financial institutions, how will that change the dynamic of how premium-level legal services are bought and sold? Not to be facetious about it, but how would you feel to be called before Barney Frank to justify your $950/hour rates?

Not facetious at all.
