You have no privacy

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 4, 2007

… when you give it up. Now most of us try to give it up, and still no one notices. You could set up a blog, hang out in chat rooms, unload your deepest, darkest secrets — even good ones — and chances are excellent that absolutely no one will ever care. Just like real life.

But if you’re a U.S. Senator, or have been one for even a few minutes? Man, there is just something about name recognition!

An average U.S. senator looking for a date doesn’t need to do much more than stroll on down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol Grille and take his pick from the cloud of obsequious Washington types and star-struck interns. But Dean Barkley isn’t your average former senator—he was appointed by former Minnesota Governor Jesse “the Body” Ventura to serve a short, two-month spell in the Senate back in 2002. Now fresh off a divorce and a stint running Kinky Friedman‘s run for governor in Texas, Barkley is trolling for companionship on Match.com, listing “erotica” as a turn-on and telling the ladies about his love for the “Beatles and Led Zeplin [sic].”

It’s one thing when you don’t have privacy.  It’s another thing entirely when you just give it away — and doing so is becoming a habit developed early these days.

The birthright

Posted by Ron Coleman on June 21, 2007

The New York Times reports:

The eldest children in families tend to develop slightly higher I.Q.s than their younger siblings, researchers are reporting, based on a large study that could effectively settle more than a half-century of scientific debate about the relationship between I.Q. and birth order.

About three points. As the article ponits out, it’s a pretty general result — an average, not a prediction of what will happen in a given family — and, believe me, I am closely acquainted with one family where this does not seem to pan out at all. In short, interesting news, but be careful to whom you send the link!

Facebook changing a paradigm

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 24, 2007

Big news:

Facebook may turn out to be a lot more important than any of us thought. It has just launched a major change in its strategy that will transform its role in the Internet ecosystem and could create a raft of new opportunities for companies of all sizes. No longer will Facebook consider itself merely another social network. Instead it is becoming a technology platform on which anyone can build applications for social computing. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg invited me to spend time with executives of Facebook and partner companies in advance of the announcement.

Brilliant.  As the oldest member of Facebook (regardless of date of birth, believe me, I am the oldest) I am very impressed.

“Roy L. Pearson Jr.”

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 3, 2007

Roy L. Pearson Jr.I guess there’s a lot I still don’t understand about blogs. My WordPress blog stats tell me that far and away the number-one search term for surfers hitting this blog in the last two days is the phrase “Roy L. Pearson Jr.”

These are words that until this posting did not appear anywhere on this blog. And when I run the search myself, on Google, I don’t get Likelihood of Success.

Now it’s true that I did send the Roy L. Pearson story to Overlawyered, home of erstwhile blogger here David M. Nieporent, Esq., before they posted on it. I can document this (even though, it is also true, I was not credited). But is Google searching my Outlook files and working its way back to this blog? It’s not that bad. Not yet.

Can anyone explain this?

A lot of Internet buzz is stupid

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 11, 2007

Like look what Wired considers noteworthy, in its attempt to predict the next social networking hotspot:

Wired News: So, can you give me your elevator pitch? What is Socializr? Jonathan Abrams: It’s a site for sharing events with your friends.

WN: There are already sites that do that, like Evite, so what’s the differentiator [sic]?

Abrams: We don’t really think Evite does that, because Evite doesn’t allow you to see what your friends are doing. The central concept of Socializr is the idea of combining social networking and event functionality together.

Step one is providing a really cool alternative to Evite, which hasn’t improved in five years. There’s just so much stuff — integrating music and video and SMS and IM — there’s just so much stuff that Evite doesn’t do. And that’s certainly part of why Socializr is valuable.

The big vision goes beyond that. The big vision is integrating that with social networking, and creating something where you could share stuff with your friends, which is an area that Evite’s never even got into.

WN: It sounds like you’re saying Evite is more of a broadcast model.

Abrams: Well, Evite doesn’t allow you to say, this person is my friend. There’s no concept of friends on Evite. And there’s no concept of sharing.

This is something you really need. Better real-time awareness of what parties your friends are going to and which they have, obviously by mistake, omitted to invite you to. And … sharing.

Oh, they will all make a mint, I’m sure. Like they did last time. Then they can share more “events.”

The idiot box

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 6, 2007

Here’s a very interesting article at Wired called about the once and future king of our cultural world, the television.

We don’t have one at home, and I think we’re a lot better for it. But of course television — not so much the institution or the cathode-ray tube, but the idea of being able to see and hear stuff on a screen — has changed our civilization forever. Things can never be as they once were. Is the change perhaps more good than bad? Can you fool even fewer of the people all of the time, or to the contrary, can you fool more of them?

TechCrunch acquires … er, oh …

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 31, 2007

TechCrunch announces that it’s acquired a website whose name is not safe for work… or home… a name we haven’t heard about since those halcyon days after the music died at the end of the first Dot Com boom.

I love the whole concept of arbitraging failure.

UPDATE:  April Fools?  Well, if you can do them in March, they are certainly more effective!
