It’s that time of day

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 4, 2009

Yes, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and it’s that time of day of the United Nations — actually describing objective facts related to the Israeli-Arab conflict that depart from the “noble savages” script regarding Palestinians.  Get this:

Christopher Gunness, a spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, said Hamas policemen broke into an aid warehouse in Gaza City on Tuesday evening and confiscated 3,500 blankets and more than 400 packages of food.

“They were armed, they seized this, they took it by force,” Gunness said, terming the seizure “absolutely unacceptable.” . . .

“Does anyone really think that the Americans, who are our single largest donor, or the Europeans, who are our largest multination donor, would give us aid in the generous way they do if they thought that aid would go to terrorists?” Gunness said.

Yeah, that’s right:  They also acknowledged an American contribution in a public statement.  This guy Gunness, I figure he’s on a bread line by the weekend, no?

And Hamas?  Same old, same old — classic fascist Big Lie speak:

The Hamas government demanded an “immediate apology” from the U.N. “for spreading false news,” Hamas spokesman Taher Nunu said.

Amazing.  Keep this up and even Jimmy Carter will be embarrassed by these guys!

“War and Decision”

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 4, 2009

John Hawkins reviews Douglas Feith’s War and Decision at Right Wing News .  Two of my favorite bullet points:

  • The CIA comes across as frighteningly, almost unbelievably incompetent and petty, even though they often didn’t inform the people relying on their advice of how little they really had to base their opinions on.
  • The worst criticism, however, was reserved for the State Department in general and Colin Powell, in particular. In Feith’s view, Powell was an arrogant, passive aggressive, disloyal bureaucrat who never said that he opposed going to war, but dragged his feet at every opportunity and fought policy battles through leaks to the press.

Yoiks! Sounds like good reading.

I wonder if government is too dumb to handle stuff like policy and war.

“Creationist” reasoning on de Nile

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 26, 2009

The Jerusalem Post reports (via Insty) that special kind of reasoning — as you’ll see, it’s not all that novel, however:

Samir Faris, a retired governmental school principal whose living room contains a portrait of the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, whom he admires for his peace efforts, agreed that “Israel was lying” about the tunnels.

“If there were tunnels, then they were created after they initiated the blockade… only because [the Palestinians] need food and bread,” he said.

But when asked about Egyptian statements that tunnels existed even before Israel withdrew its soldiers from the Gaza Strip in 2005, Faris said that Palestinians collaborating with Israel had built the tunnels “to create chaos on the borders between Egypt and Israel so that the image of Egypt would be damaged in the eyes of the world.”

You know nothing

You know nothing

Sound familiar?  It’s a perfect twin of the commonly claimed argument of creationists that “God put fossils into the Earth during Creation to test our faith.” (I say “commonly claimed” because searching Google, I couldn’t actually find a text in which a creationist actually says that.  But everyone agrees that they (we) do.)

Same here:  The tunnels were put there to make it look like there were tunnels there, and thus to test the faith of Arabs, as well as Europeans and other liberals, in the childlike, benevolent innocence of Palestinians, wherever they be.

Dig?

How it’s done

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 12, 2009

This you have to like — remarks to reporters from an  an Israeli battalion commander in Gaza:

“A couple of days ago, an armed squad popped up from a tunnel that was concealed by a nearby building. We took them out with tank fire and a bulldozer,” he said.

In another incident, the commander said, his men spotted a suicide bomber on a bicycle.

“He ran off to take cover in a building, presumably to draw us in,” Yehuda said. “We demolished the building on top of him with a bulldozer.”

Sounds like a plan.

We’re from the press and we’re here to help

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 11, 2009

The  International Herald Tribune promises us it’s only telling us the top-secret stuff about Israeli – U.S. exchanges about Iran’s nuclear program that it thinks it’s okay to reveal:

Several details of the covert effort have been omitted from this account, at the request of senior United States intelligence and administration officials, to avoid harming continuing operations.

Good to know.

I suppose it’s better than some possible alternatives — at least they acknowledge there could be a defensible interest in not undermining the good guys.  And that there still could be such a thing as good guys.

Ron Paul: Every bit as bad as we thought

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 6, 2009

Ron Paul’s wickedness is not a big surprise — it was out there, as I told you, for anyone who wanted to know. But Cold Fury lays out Paul’s latest display of true, Jew-hating colors just so:

“Israel’s preemptive war.” “A few small missiles.” Palestinians “living in concentration camps.” America “rightfully to blame.” It’s all here in this rich, rich vein of vapid isolationism, utter stupidity, and contempt for the only functioning democracy in the Middle East . . .  The line between Left and Right isn’t straight; it’s circular, and the ends meet right smack between this moron’s ears.

No, it’s not “merely anti-Israel” — you can’t be that morally blind about Israel’s moral position in this situation and not be an antisemite; and given the track record, this is not exactly a new insight.  As blogger Rougman comments at the post, “I guess he doesn’t want to leave that Nazi vote on the table come 2012.”  They never do.

So what’s scarier — that this wretched gnome is member of Congress?  Or that so many people, otherwise capable of being taken seriously, were so seriously taken with Ron Paul?

The offense of existence

Posted by Ron Coleman on January 5, 2009

The “Muslim world” and its friends caterwaul constantly that America never gives its leaders and its people fair consideration, that it doesn’t treat them as “full partners” in various and sundry “dialogues” and “processes,” and that it unfairly favors the literate and liberal Zionist regime that causes all the world’s problems. It’s really quite a thing to see, for they don’t merely have a problem with this tilt, but with any assertion of self-defense by either the U.S. or Israel for any reason. Thus the very concept of the war on terrorism is considered objectionable by Muslim populations: The effort by the United States, and the West in general, to undermine the power and capacity of terrorists is considered an offense, for the obvious reason that it is directed at, well, terrorists.

So it’s not surprising that the usual suspects are outraged, shocked, horrified at Israel’s long-overdue (strategically, if not tactically and logistically) assertion of its fundamental right of self-defense. Read this story, and see how many times you search for an actual argument based on fairness or some sense of shared humanity before you give up, as usual:

In Turkey, more than 5,000 people held an anti-Israel rally in Istanbul, waving Palestinian flags and burning effigies of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President George W. Bush. Also in Istanbul, club-wielding police broke up a small demonstration by protesters who hurled eggs at the Israeli Consulate . . .

Israel’s weeklong aerial bombardment of Gaza and the start of the ground offensive Saturday against Hamas have drawn condemnation across the Muslim and Arab world and news coverage of the invasion has dominated Arab satellite television stations.

Thousands in cities from Tehran to Damascus have also taken to the streets to protest the attacks, which have killed about 500 Palestinians and wounded more than 1,600, according to Gaza officials.

In some cases, the protests of the past week were as directed against Arab governments as much as Israel, with many criticizing their perceived inaction or lack of sufficient support of the Palestinians.

On Sunday, the leaders of Egypt and Jordan — the only two Mideast Arab countries to sign a peace agreement with Israel and maintain diplomatic ties — condemned the ground offensive and called for an end to Israel’s onslaught in Gaza.

I’m not saying it’s surprising that they don’t share my view, or that of the Israel government, that this campaign was justified. I’m pointing out that not a single leader, protester or other representative voice is heard in this article by Lebanese reporter Bassem Mroue (more here) explaining why — given the objective fact that Israel has been under bombardment from this territory for months, by the ruling government of it, and no one has said or done anything to stop it — Israel’s actions cannot possibly be justified. Israelis: Don’t make me stop this car!

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 25, 2008

That Ehud Olmert is some hothead!

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made a direct appeal to Gaza’s people to pressure their leaders to stop the barrages. But the attacks showed no signs of ending. By nightfall, three rockets and 15 mortar shells had exploded in Israel.

Olmert issued his appeal in a rare interview with the Arabic language satellite channel al-Arabiya, saying Israel would not hesitate to respond with force if the attacks continued.

Isn’t a little hard to say you “won’t hesitate” when you’re in the middle of an extended bout of hesitation?  It gets even worse — you might think the Onion wrote this last part:

“I am telling them now, it may be the last minute, I’m telling them stop it. We are stronger,” he said.

On the other hand, I think the Onion already did write it…

UPDATE:  Car stopped.  How much of this could have been avoided, though, had a generation of deterrent credibility not been squandered in a decade?
