Obama the Unready

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 16, 2007

From the New York Times:

Former President Bill Clinton made an unusually direct attack Friday night on Senator Barack Obama, one of his wife’s leading rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, suggesting that voters who would support someone with Mr. Obama’s experience were willing to “roll the dice” on the presidency.Appearing on “The Charlie Rose Show” on PBS, Mr. Clinton repeatedly questioned Mr. Obama’s preparedness for the White House, noting that he took office in January 2005 and became a presidential candidate about two years later. (Mr. Obama was an Illinois state senator before that.)

“When is the last time we elected a president based on one year of service in the Senate before he started running?” Mr. Clinton said. At another point, he appeared to compare Mr. Obama to a “gifted television commentator” running for president. “They’d have only one year less experience in national politics” than Mr. Obama, he said.

Why, Bill Clinton — that scheming, philandering, political assassin! That traitor to the cause of another black man being elevated to the Presidency! That….

completely on-target Bill Clinton.

Yes, Obama is in the driver’s seat in terms of the Democratic polling right now. It’s delicious to see the coronation of Empress Inevitable be delayed or even threatened this way. But the fact is Bill Clinton has hit Obama in his absolutely most vulnerable place: His utter lack of appropriate experience for the job of President. As I wrote almost a year ago:

What struck me was the picture that went with the article — how absurdly young Obama is, especially for someone in his first term in the Senate, to run for President. Yes, black people age “better” than we flinty alabaster Europeans; and Obama is blessed too with a thin, Kenyan physique that accentuates his downright boyishness. But he doesn’t only look young: He is young, very young. We have had young Presidents, and the results have been decidedly mixed — especially in matters of judgment and maturity, in fact, especially in modern times. This does not speak to the personality of Barack Obama; but young he is, too young to for the job he says he wants now.

I understand that he is very liberal, perhaps more liberal than Senator Clinton. That would probably cause me to oppose his nomination if I were not so compelled by the idea that he is too inexperienced to be President of the United States. I am not moved by the fact that he is well-spoken, and a member of a minority that has never occupied the White House, and bright. I am all those things, too, and though I’m two years younger than he is, this is no Constitutional deficiency. Besides, I look 50, whereas he looks about 24. I think it’s time again for a round-shouldered President, and plus, I’m not quite bald yet. Yet I restrain myself despite these obvious qualifications, because I am not ready.

Senator Obama is not ready.

And yet he may win the nomination. But thanks in part to Bill Clinton, and his far better-aged better half, and the campaign they’re determined to wage against Obama, he will certainly not be elected President.

Bedfellows at dance

Mickey Kaus:

Romney has just launched an ad attacking Huckabee as soft on illegal immigration. Huckabee is being defended by … John McCain. Which is a little like being defended against a charge of marital infidelity by Bill Clinton.

Yes, that does leave a mark!

Boob

The Corner:

I’m no RonPaulista, but you’ve got to admire a guy who tells a Cuban audience in Miami that “Actually, I believe we’re at a time where we even ought to talk to Cuba and trade and travel to Cuba.” He was booed, which was predictable, but it’s good to have politicians who are at least occasionally willing to say things that will get them booed.

Oh, then you will really admire Ron Paul.

What happened to Eliot Spitzer?

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 5, 2007

The New Yorker considers the question. Excerpt:

Albany is the arbiter in New York’s ceaseless upstate-downstate tug-of-war, which simultaneously pits rural Republicans against big-city liberals, and Rust Belt Democrats against supply-side suburbanites. The proliferation of cross-purposes and strange bedfellows makes for pernicious and complicated arbitrating. This is one (but far from the only) reason that Albany is home to what may be the most dysfunctional state government in the nation.

There they go again. Why does New Jersey never get any respect?!  NB:  Smarty-pants Ivy boy Spitzer misuses the word enormity early on — and it evidently whizzes right past the New Yorker.  No respect for anything in this world!

Joe whathisname scraping for traction

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 30, 2007

Remember whathisname?

Presidential hopeful Delaware Sen. Joe Biden stated unequivocally that he will move to impeach President Bush if he bombs Iran without Congressional approval.

Biden spoke in front of a crowd of approximately 100 at a Seacoast Media Group forum Thursday, which focused on the Iraq War and foreign policy. When an audience member expressed fear of another war with Iran, he said he does not typically engage in threats, but had no qualms about issuing a direct warning to the oval office.

“The President has no authority to unilaterally attack Iran and if he does, as foreign relations committee chairman, I will move to impeach,” said Biden, which was followed by a raucous applause.

There. That gets you on Drudge. It must gall the hell out of him — kind of like McCain — that by now, after all these laps around the track — that new guys come in and he’s not a top contender for his party’s nomination. Biden is just not serious, though. Look, more:

Biden said he is in the process of meeting with constitutional law experts to prepare a legal memorandum saying as much, and intends to send it to the President.

When resident Joel Carp asked Biden why not impeach now given what has already been done, Biden said it was a valid point but might not be constitutionally valid and potentially counterproductive. A case for impeachment must have clear evidence, he said, and blame should be directed at the right parties.

“If you’re going to impeach George Bush, you better impeach Cheney first,” said Biden, which also received applause.

This is just pathetic. And the real shame of it is there’s evidently a decent guy under there, who is every bit good looking enough to qualify for the office.

UPDATE:  Like I said — pathetic (VIP).

Not so Fein

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 28, 2007

Instapundit:

GLOOM FROM BRUCE FEIN: “The United States culture is decaying, growing steadily less capable of supporting a republican form of government.

He might be right, but Fein isn’t the one to make the argument.  From what I can tell he’s rounded the bend — and no one has demonstrated to my satisfaction that he hasn’t.

Huckabee vs. Wahhabi

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 26, 2007

Mike Huckabee is trying to separate himself from the pack as the hour gets late by going after the Saudis.

Probably too little, too late. But I like when good candidates add legitimate issues to the campaign this way. I have my view, but this is a legitimate issue.

In the bunker

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 23, 2007

The Weekly Standard (via Glenn) on left-wing denial of the improvemement in Iraq:

Of course, the left-wing nutroots live in their own self-contained universe.

The real question: are congressional Democrats really going to stay in the bunker with them through November 2008?

I think there’s another question: Whither the mainstream media? Answer that one, and then see where the one posed by the Standard goes.
