Hitting bottom, all right

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 25, 2008

Ara Rubyan:

My son has asked me on more than one occasion recently, “So what do we do now?” Usually, in that conversation, I start out apologizing to him for the mess my generation has left him to deal with. Which leads to him asking his question.

Say it ain’t so, Ara.  You apologize to your son?  On behalf of your entire generation?  Because it has left the future such a sticky, gooey mess?

It is stuff like this — and Ara is thoughtful, and insightful, and serious — that reminds me that even though I’m obviously not nearly rabidly oppositional enough about Barack Obama, I must really not be any kind of liberal at all.

Let the man lash out

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 23, 2008

Naturally he’s upset:  His son just killed himself on the Internet:

The father of a college student whose suicide was broadcast live over a webcam said Saturday he was appalled by the virtual audience that egged on his son and called for tougher regulation of Internet sites.

“Tougher regulation of Internet sites”?   That’s like arguing that because people shout out to jumpers, “JUMP!,” we should have tougher regulation of city blocks.

Don’t confuse the medium with the human condition.  But let’s give the man his space, too.  It’s a sad thing.

New trope for a new age

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 4, 2008

It's not stealing!  It's "liberating"!

Liberating!

Vodkapundit: “The dirtiest campaign since Nixon.”

There’s your trope, and Stephen coined it.  Remember who told you first.

Pelosi: War is peace.

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 29, 2008

Far more than Barack Obama, it is Nancy Pelosi I have always found truly contemptible.  Here’s a beauty from the San Francisco News:

[O]n concerns that Democrats might control both the White House and Congress [Pelosi] said the following:

“Elect us, hold us accountable, and make a judgment and then go from there. But I do tell you that if the Democrats win, and have substantial majorities, Congress of the United States will be more bipartisan,” said Pelosi.

I wonder if that means that if Congress were entirely Democratic, it would actually become polypartisan?

UPDATE:  Hunh.  Shamelessness is catchy!  ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRUUGGHHH!

“Slouching Towards Obamalon”

Posted by Jack on October 26, 2008

(With apologies to Yeats).

The center turns, and like a slow and feral worm does crawl
This way, and then that, as intent upon its unconsidered course
As any carrion byrd wandering upon unseasoned currents;
Mere change is loosed upon the world, and with it everything
Is promised best when most wanted promises are made
To still the restless waves which beat upon the shores
That everywhere men go they drown away in innocence
The claims to independent gain with aid of rich lucre lost;
The right lacks all conviction, while all the others do seethe
With the accumulated wait of full and firm intensity.

Revelations of the way to come do litter outwards to the press
Of those who clamor now for more, their brightest dreams
So very like a fall of man, painted fresh a Second Coming;
The Second Coming now at hand! Hardly can those words be whispered
Than a vast image on the world does fall, and lingers there
A shape, indistinct and yet foreshadowed, predicting a unipolar Party;
Where before were two there is now one alone and sole unfettered
The better to make ruin undisturbed by challenge wrought
When we had our chances in the desert and wandered aimless here
To find the Gost of our Times has given birth to naught;
‘Ware what you wish when you wish for your warnings,
We have been swallowed by the past, not given omens of the future,
And what untested beast, its hour derived again at last
Slouches towards Washington to be born in dread?

Pantsed

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 22, 2008

The pants lawsuit “judge” that did so much for this blog:  He’s back, says the Washington Post:

Pearson, a former District administrative law judge, recycled some of the same legal arguments that were rejected last year by a judge in D.C. Superior Court — namely, that a sign at the Northeast Washington store saying “Satisfaction Guaranteed” meant he was entitled to the money.

“This is not about a pair of suit pants,” Pearson, 58, representing himself, told a three-judge panel of the D.C. Court of Appeals. The term “satisfaction guaranteed” is “very subjective” and with “no parameters at all,” he said, accusing the cleaners of fraud.

What is so phenomenal about this is the idea that anyone who has every practiced law and been paid for it, much less someone vested with the title of a judicial officer in any jurisdiction, could ever, ever make this argument with a straight face in a court of law.

The reporting about the oral argument says, indeed, that the appellate panel was incredulous at the fact that Pearson not only made this “argument,” but acknowledged that he didn’t have a single judicial precedent to back it up — thank God.

But really, something is very, very wrong here.  (Hat tip to James Hertsch.)

That thing floating in the punch bowl

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 22, 2008

It’s domestic spending:

Even with the tax cuts, and even with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bush would have reduced the national debt by nearly half a trillion dollars if he’d kept domestic spending under control. Instead, he did just the opposite: the Medicare drug benefit, No Child Left Behind, and dozens of smaller new spending programs he pushed through a reluctant congress. And the national debt went up by $1.3 trillion.

I’m not sure which is sadder — that these spending programs were approved by the Republican congressional majority forged by genuine fiscal conservatives on a promise of balancing the budget by cutting spending, or that the only other viable political party has been continuously criticizing Bush and the Republican party for not spending even more.

Thank you, Maniakes, for doing the math.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is the legacy George Bush will never live down.

No cream, thanks — I like mine Socialist

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 22, 2008

Kansas City Star columnist Lewis Diuguid:

Read my lips!

Read my lips!

McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.

Wow.  Imagine if you described Obama as a SKINNY socialist!  He’d be so black he would actually absorb energy instead of just money.

Words, meanings diverge ever more

This week’s PostSecret thought:

Has the word “proud” become utterly meaningless?

The reasonable man

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 5, 2008

Instapundit:

SO WHY NOT JUST LEGALIZE IT? Craigslist a hotbed of online prostitution. The comments to the story seem surprisingly pro-legalization.

“Surprisingly”?  There he goes again.

Professor Reynolds — how come the keen Yale-trained legal mind goes right out the window once these libertarian tropes come around? — “Craig’s List sells sex” –> “Internet users are in favor of prostitution” –> “QED: Prostitution should be legalized” is not an argument.

Glenn, life is good in your house and mine, and life is good when you go outside to take pictures.  But the fact is, my friend, for no small number of its denizens, the Internet is not only a hotbed of libertarianism.  It’s a not-so-hot bed of guys who, er, frankly are a little biased on this topic… given their options.
