“Ala. building can’t shake swastika shape”

From the ground, the Wesley Acres Methodist retirement home looks like any other building. But fly over in an airplane, and the outline is unmistakable: It’s one big swastika.

Prompted by complaints from a Jewish activist, the agency that owns the government-funded building is planning to alter its shape to disguise the Nazi symbol.

This is the most idiotic thing I have read in a while, and I do a lot of reading for someone who still moves his lips on the big words.

This is what a “Jewish activist” has to be “active” about? An efficiently designed building that invokes his or her superstitious emotions when viewed from the sky?!

Good things the Jews don’t have any real problems.

Say what?

Instapundit:

If I were John McCain, I’d be asking why the party that put together these primary rules thinks it can run a health-care plan. Or the country . . . .

If I were Glenn Reynolds, I’d be asking why a libertarian like me thinks the President of the United States “runs the country”!

Mine, yours and hours

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 12, 2008

I linked to this story as an update to the previous item, but I did just notice this on re-reading it:

“NY first lady’s charmed life slips away”:

Eliot Spitzer was born into wealth, the son of a New York real estate developer. His wife’s background is more modest.Silda Spitzer, 50, grew up in Concord, N.C., where her father was a hospital administrator. She attended Meredith College, a women’s college in Raleigh, N.C., and went from there to Harvard Law School, where she met Spitzer, and to a career in mergers and acquisitions.

While at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, a prestigious New York law firm, she billed as many as 3,300 hours a year — more than nine hours a day, including weekends.

3,300 hours?

Oh, so it turns out she’s actually, um, a liar and a crook herself! “More than nine hours a day, including weekends.” That’s with a wink, people. I’ve worked in a big firm, and believe me: After 2200 the hours get very, very soft. Above 2500 they’re gauzy. Pushing the high 2000’s and they’re mist.

At 3,300, my friends, you are in the realm of pure imagination.

Except for the client that pays the invoice.

Lots of grey tones in life, huh.

That doesn’t make it okay, what her husband did to her, but … it does tell you a little bit about the kind of person who would hook up with an Eliot Spitzer.

UPDATE: Note today’s Classic Poem of the Day from About.com!

YET MORE: And now he has resigned… evidently with Mrs. Spitzer at his side. And they are saying that she is the one who pushed most adamantly for him not to quit. And then you see a thing or two about ambitious people, and how they are drawn together.

Petty tyranny

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 5, 2008

ABC News:

Voters in two Vermont towns approved measures Tuesday calling for the indictment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for what they consider violations of the Constitution.

More symbolic than anything, the items sought to have police arrest Bush and Cheney if they ever visit Brattleboro or nearby Marlboro or to extradite them for prosecution elsewhere — if they’re not impeached first.

“More symbolic than anything”?  How about more pathetic than anything.

Most of us manage to keep our impotence to ourselves, though it is true that it is harder to hide our ignorance.  Must of us don’t live in Vermont, though.

Moon over Passaic

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 2, 2008

moon-over-passaic.jpgIt’s a lot to ask of a modest BlackBerry Pearl to take a picture in lighting conditions like this one of two weeks ago, and for it to come out beautiful.

On the other hand, compelling can be something else altogether, and so can the concept of capturing and connecting with the moment.

That moment compelled me, and I, in the midst of everything else, could not but stop and capture it.

And perhaps even the beauty, sometimes, follows.  The beauty of Main Avenue in Passaic Park under a full moon is not readily apparent to everyone, by a long shot.  But in its way it captured me.

A moment of silence for the passing of the great one

William F. Buckley Jr. dies at 82 – Yahoo! News

Author and conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr. has died at age 82.

His assistant Linda Bridges says Buckley died Wednesday morning at his home in Stamford, Conn. She says he had been ill with emphysema and was found dead by his cook.

UPDATE: At least start at National Review for this coverage. Interesting to think about how this “conservative moment” will affect McCain.

UPDATE:  This is very good, too!

The judicial wind blows cold in the Midwest

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 24, 2008

Decision of the Day — from the Seventh Circuit:

Plaintiffs have behaved like a pack of weasels and can’t expect any part of their tale be believed.

And stuff. Why do judges in my cases just shrug their shoulders over papers filled with lies and unprovable assertions? Has it just been the luck of the draw for 18 years?

Or should I move back to Chicago?

Hat tip to Ted Frank, and an unusually juicy Overlawyered “roundup” dated yesterday.
