Here’s a very good obituary about Normal Mailer, on whose imminent death I commented a short time ago.

William Jefferson Clinton, former President of the United States
Posted by Ron Coleman on October 25, 2007
Instapundit links to an item that ran on Drudge earlier today, but I got all tied up trying to embed it here (couldn’t do it): A video of Bill Clinton at a speaking event, answering a question from a Truther who asks about 9/11 being an “inside job.” The former President, making Jimmy Carter look like the abominable puissant that he is, is having none of it, and just says — his jaw set, his teeth gritted, and with genuine rage:
An inside job?
How dare you?
How dare you?
End of discussion. And they carted the guy away.
It’s amazing that this manly, no-nonsense response is deserving of praise, but it is. I am deeply touched every time I watch this clip, and proud of his reaction. Notwithstanding the attack on Hillary Clinton coming from the far left, who knows whether more than a couple of deluded left-wingers will feel the cold water hitting their faces when they view this clip.

Obama, hands down
Posted by Ron Coleman on October 23, 2007
I said he wasn’t ready, but I wasn’t ready for this (via Glenn). How does he explain this one away?
Members of the radical right [sic] continue to remove the motes from Barack Obama’s eyes, while ignoring the boulders in their own vision.A few weeks ago, it was
Obama’s failure to wear a flag lapel pin that upset some conservatives. Now it’s Obama’s — gasp! — failure to put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem that has some people up in arms.
The website NewsBusters picks the nit with the senator from Illinois:
Does he perhaps believe that, like wearing the flag pin, the hand on the heart isn’t “true patriotism”?
Does anyone believe that putting a hand over the heart proves “true patriotism”?
“Radical right” — sheesh. But the question is: Why do liberals insist on erecting vast policies — economic, legal, educational, military — on symbolism, but when the symbolism of patriotism is in play, it “doesn’t matter”?
Of course it matters — it is not sufficient, but it is necessary. Putting your hand on your heart matters, if any symbolism does. And when you’re a presidential candidate, or for that matter merely a United States Senator, that “when” is always.

Sleazy school days
Posted by Ron Coleman on October 21, 2007
The AP has a very long story about improprieties (to say the least) between teachers and students in the schools (also picked up with some skepticism by Protein Wisdom). The consensus seems to be that it’s an intractable problem, and an old one, and that given the mobility of people it’s hard to keep predators out of the schools.
What the AP ignores, probably due to its own well-documented cultural leanings, is an obvious if un-politically correct possible solution: single-sex schools with single-sex faculties above a certain grade.
It’s not that there are no homosexual predators; we know that’s not true. But what if you could cut the incidence of the problem by two-thirds or more — probably a lot more? The main pattern, after all, is — surprise! — male teachers going after young girls. Well, maybe male teachers shouldn’t be anywhere near young girls, especially in a time when the latter are taught by Madison Avenue and their indulgent and equally morally confused parents that looking and acting like strumpets is the stairway to consumer heaven and self-actualization. Even “nice girls” are hard pressed to understand that there’s such a thing as right and wrong in today’s moral environment, much less what right and wrong are. Then you put males as authority figures in their lives, and are surprised when some percentage of them act like males (if not like “men”) and make the most of opportunities to take impressionable girls and impress them a lot more?
Pace the real problem with the casting of males as predators, why not take them out of the majority of potentially predatory situations? It would be a radical change to cancel these emotional chemistry classes, but as the article documents, there’s a radical problem out there — especially if, God forbid, it’s your kid.The problem is not confined to predatory males, either. The reverse of the classic “Lolita” scenario is a growing phenomenon as well, and while it’s a big yuck in the popular media when an adult woman teacher is caught misbehaving with a teenage charge, the truth of it is deplorable. It’s one thing such couplings to occupy adolescent fantasies, and that alone might be reason enough, as it is in many religious schools, for pubescent and older males not to be expected to stare at a grown woman for hours a day in school. But when the so-called adults, adrift in a society that mocks moral boundaries, act like adolescents themselves and start “hooking up” with their male students, you are watching a society come apart at the seams.
The schools don’t have the moral will to stitch those seams back together; the education establishment, in fact, as much to blame as any other segment of society for the rips. But socialized education is to the standard in this country, as it has been for over a century and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Parents, and those of us whose taxes support these institutions, have both a political and a moral obligation to prevent further damage. The teachers’ unions will shriek and threaten, and the D-word — “diversity” — which has been elevated to the level of a quasi-constitutional value, will be bandied about in editorials, school board meetings and legal pleadings. But if the teachers’ unions are against an idea, that’s usually a pretty good clue that you’re onto something. Let’s try it and see!

Comrade Shock Treatment

At Hamline University, they’re using psychiatry the old fashioned way: To enforce groupthink. There’s lots of that retro stuff going on, actually.

There may be more to this story.
I sure hope so. (Via IP.)

Kollege kapers

Not only at left-wing bastions such as Columbia and other Ivy League schools is the fox in charge of the hen house. Oral Roberts U. is in trouble, it appears.
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Today it is the mandarins of big-money academia — regardless of politics — who live high off the fat of the land via inflated tuitions, unquenchable fundraising drives, Wall Street-fueled endowments, government grants and non-profit status. At Dartmouth, the entrenched bureaucracy is struggling with activist alumni that want to prevent the school from becoming responsive to any but its self-perpetuating institutional self. At Ave Maria, admittedly no Dartmouth — well, who knows what’s happening? This is all related to the political correctness and on-the-fly ethical situationalism displayed by Columbia’s recent provision of a platform for Iran’s fascist president, because ultimately it’s about a class — the heads of universities and the trustees they put in place to keep them there — that answers to no one.
Perhaps at some point Congress will recognize that there is little functional difference between these institutions and “for profit” corporations, and require regulation and disclosure in academia the way they do under the securities laws. In both cases, the people at the top make a lot of money and bear virtually no risk for where they take their institutions. The difference is that shareholders in corporations can sell their stakes any time if they don’t like corporate governance; alumni and students are stuck with their alma maters and sheepskins forever.
UPDATE: Emerges a meme.
