Gazoo — who knew?

Posted by Ron Coleman on September 24, 2008

Dum dum!

Dum dum!

Looking for an image of The Great Gazoo for this post at LIKELIHOOD OF CONFUSION®, I quickly found and linked to this one at Wikipedia.  My post had, really, nothing to do with Gazoo, but because that post — about Carolyn Elefant‘s new e-book entitled Social Networking For Lawyers — alluded to the “books for dummies” concept, well, obviously who appeared to me but the little guy himself?

So I took a second I don’t have to read the first paragraph of the article, and I saw … this:

The Great Gazoo is voiced by Harvey Korman.

I did not know this!

Did everyone know this but me?

But of course!  Of course that’s Harvey Korman!

Thats Headley, not Heddy!

That's Hedley, not Heddy!

I… I have a soft spot for Harvey Korman.  I blogged about this somewhere when he died, but I can’t find where.  (Did I just imagine it?)  There was something about the fact that he really was, as a comic actor, just a notch above, well, mediocre.  Maybe I feel that if I had pursued an acting career, that’s what I would have actually come across as, not the comic genius I really thought I was, so identified with him.  Well, yeah, Harvey Korman was successful, as these things go, but always as a second banana, and he just wasn’t ever really very good.

But in fact he was delicious.

He was so, so Gazoo!  And both of them seemed, really, across the small screen to me at least, to really be good, good guys deep inside.

Dum-dum!

Is that where they keep them?

Posted by Ron Coleman on August 28, 2008

You can’t escape justice merely by donning a tin hat, it seems. The European Court of Human Rights, his last resort after a series of British courts were unhelpful, has refused to block the extradition to the U.S. of Gary McKinnon, a Briton who hacked into Pentagon and NASA computers.  This is despite the fact that he claims extradition “would violate his human rights.”

U.S. prosecutors want to put McKinnon on trial for allegedly hacking into 97 computers belonging to NASA and several branches of the U.S. military from a bedroom in a north London home. He claims he was searching for UFOs.

In retrospect it seems the better tactical move would have been to claim immunity under the Federations’ Uniform Code of Justice.  Or, from the looks of him, some provision of the Vulcan constitution.

It came from outer space, but very slowly

It came from outer space, but very slowly

Presumably the high-tech aliens he is seeking will swoop down at this point and take care of things for McKinnon, having given earth’s puny rulers every chance to act justly.  On the other hand, given their advanced state, they may just be too embarrassed, based on what he told Wired a couple of years ago:

A NASA photographic expert said that there was a Building 8 at Johnson Space Center where they regularly airbrushed out images of UFOs from the high-resolution satellite imaging. I logged on to NASA and was able to access this department. They had huge, high-resolution images stored in their picture files. They had filtered and unfiltered, or processed and unprocessed, files.

My dialup 56K connection was very slow trying to download one of these picture files.

It would be, wouldn’t it!

Hey, wait a minute!

Bob Miller on Beyond BT:

At Yael’s home, I also met the famed lawyer Ron Coleman, as proven by the attached photo he took with a small electronic device. This reassured us that we both existed independently of the Web.

Wouldn’t not taking the picture with a small electronic device have actually been somewhat more reassuring?

How’d I do that?

Sometimes Glenn Reynolds is positively charming in his lack of self awareness of why he has so much influence — and other times he almost seems to break through and “get it”!

Global cooling

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 29, 2008

Glenn Reynolds links to and repeats the query: “Is it becoming cool to mock the Greens?”

It wasn’t cool all along?  Wow.  Now I’m pretty embarrassed.

Some lines are too good to waste.

Having heard that one: How much more can John Edwards go away than he is now?

Obama, the constitutionally unready

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 22, 2008

Heh. A while ago I argued that the Obama concept — as it was being bottled and sold at the time — was intriguing, but that it was not ready for market.

Now Glenn Reynolds links to Steve Calabrisi, who demonstrates how, by the magic of the living, breathing, metastasizing Constitution, he’s not even constitutional!

I hate getting poked by penumbras, don’t you?

Cross-posted on Dean’s World.

UPDATE:  No minor irony.

The Right-Winger’s Guide

Posted by Ron Coleman on July 7, 2008

Jack Hattendoff asks:

[H]ow can a card carrying Union Member whose very existence is predicated to working in a factory hold hands and sing Coom-by-ya with an Environmentalist who wants nothing more than to shut that factory down to save the planet?

“Nothing more,” Jack?  Not even free love, coerced water flouridation, direct election of Senators and New Math?  Perhaps we need to read the book:  Jack would answer these questions, and more, it seems in his book, The Right-Winger’s Guide to the Radical Left.

Pass the mayo

Posted by Ron Coleman on June 6, 2008

I spent an inordinate amount of time last night writing a post about mayonnaise on LIKELIHOOD OF CONFUSION®. I am gratified that it’s getting quite a bit of very unexpected play!

If you’re among the somewhat more select audience that reads this blog, though, you shouldn’t miss the post. Because, as you’ll see, it… it means quite a lot to me.

Monkeys Control a Mechanical Arm With Their Thoughts

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 28, 2008

Monkeys Control a Mechanical Arm With Their Thoughts — actually, a fascinating article. But the title itself sounds incredibly like a creepy hallucination, or the kind of thing a psychotic would walk around saying.

Um, that’s just how it struck me.

UPDATE:  A-hah!  I’m not the only one troubled by this!  Here’s Ted Frank‘s Facebook status since Thursday:

Ted Frank

thinks he will start a legal niche bringing suits over damage caused by monkey-controlled robot armies.
