Miami nice

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 21, 2008

View from mediation in MiamiIt’s a down-time moment for me here in Miami, where I am representing a client in a mediation session over a copyright claim. Or several. Quite a nice view from the conference room, but I’d rather be on this side of the glass — it is monstrously hot, even though it’s still only May; yesterday was evidently a record 97 degrees.

Of course when I got to my parents’ house in La Boca Vista (Phase III) — or is it Mar Gables? — I asked them about, well, the air conditioning. “I’m very comfortable,” said my mom… of course. Okay, well, I asked them — just what exactly number do you guys set the air conditioner at here?

How can I time this for you in writing?

I’ll just come out and say it. It’s set on seventy-seven degrees!!! Yes, that is the target temperature, not the one that, when it gets to be that outside, you turn on the air conditioner!

Okay, so I am a still-hot-running saftig forty-five-year-old male, not a 67-year-old woman recovering from an operation and her dutiful husband, but I have to admit the concept really did take me back to that Seinfeld episode.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that

Not that I’m one to talk, either, but I hadn’t realized that Jonathan Alter was the inspiration for the George Costanza character on Seinfeld!

And Mickey Kaus… um, Kramer?

Smile, stupid!

The Journal News:

A tech-savvy White Plains woman whose apartment was burglarized solved the crime herself after she was able to log on to her stolen laptop, photograph one of the suspects with it and get photos of another, police said.

Edmon Shahikian, 23, of 13 Cobbling Rock Road, Katonah, and Ian Frias, 20, of 1609 E. 174th St., the Bronx, were picked up at their homes Wednesday night after the victim turned the pictures over to police. The police said they recovered most of the $5,000 worth of electronics stolen in the burglary.

“Our victim did a phenomenal job,” said Lt. Eric Fischer, commander of the Detective Division. “She knew her computer, and she let us know as soon as she obtained the information. We rolled on it immediately, and the result is the arrest of two burglary suspects and the recovery of most of the stolen property.”

Now the stolen stuff tells on you! Pretty impressive. Hat tip to Avigdor M’Bawlmawr.

Subway rider

Originally uploaded by Ron Coleman.

On the way to court this afternoon my paralegal and I shared the number 5 subway with the Mayor of the City of New York! That’s the Honorable Michael Bloomberg right there.

He was blocking the door, completely contrary to the instructions clearly posted in the subway. But, you know, he is an old guy, so I didn’t give him any aggravation over it. Still, rules are rules. I did suggest to the paralegal that she should mostly be impressed by the fact that neither of us had ever been that close to that much money before, but — being a drooling fan of the Mayor herself — she just nodded, tight-lipped.

We got off at the same stop — City Hall, of course, where the courthouses are too. This is easily one of the worst-off subway stops I have any regular truck with in Manhattan. You’d think the Mayor would have some pull on this!

Good day in court, too, except on the merits of the motion being made to dismiss my client’s case. But I sounded great. You know, a nice resonant vocal quality can be its own reward (something I have over the Mayor, mind you). Luckily we are billing by the hour on this so I don’t have to rely on that, however.

Duty. Honor. Country.

IMAO:

Barack Obama once continued to give a speech even though he knew a bee was in the room.

We each have to face up the challenges of our time and place.

Roland Dodds brings me doohickeys

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 29, 2008

Roland has tagged me in this sentence game doohickey, and who am I to break the chain?

Here’s how it goes:

1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

It seems like a party game without the headache in the morning. It’s the kind of thing you do if you are having trouble getting to sleep, I guess. Which I hardly ever do.

But what do you know. Your lucky night!

Here come my three sentences, based on my closest-to-hand English language book right this minute, a little old number called The Torah Profile (Mesorah Publications 1988), edited actually by my old friend Rabbi Nisson Wolpin, that I am not quite sure what it’s doing here. I mean, I do have a lot of this stuff, but why it is in the bookshelf in my home office seems to be a Passover cleaning artifact that I am powerless to explain. I mean, it has my wife’s maiden name written in it! Anyway, the book is an anthology of biographical sketches of Torah scholars from different eras originally published in Agudath Israel‘s Jewish Observer magazine. This selection happens to be about the Tunisian sage Hakham Yitzhak Hai Tayeb who lived from 1743 to 1837, if you don’t mind! (To those of you who know Har Nof in Israel, I believe it is he after whom the street called Rechov Chai Taib is named.)

Okay, here goes:

The Phoenicians had two city-states, Tyre and Sidon (cities by those names still exist today), each with its own king. The Phoenicians were known as the world’s best businessmen and shippers; indeed, there is archaeological evidence that they reached North America. It goes without saying that they had branches of their export-import trade in every port of the Mediterranean, Tunis — or Carthage, as it was known in antiquity — among them.

Hope you’re satisfied, Roland.

Sprite that I am, I hereby playfully tag Nieporent, Irina, Mary, Soccer Dad and Ara.

“Tests Confirm T. Rex Kinship With Birds”

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 24, 2008

New York Times:

In the first analysis of proteins extracted from dinosaur bones, scientists say they have established more firmly than ever that the closest living relatives of the mighty predator Tyrannosaurus rex are modern birds.

Hoo boy. Here come the paternity suits!

Spiritual growth is for everyone!

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 25, 2008

Glenn Reynolds always struck me as an agnostic, at best, but it looks as if slowly but surely he is narrowing down the field of possibilities:

I don’t think that Bill Richardson is Judas. Of course, I don’t think that Hillary is Jesus, either.

Just think, a few months earlier along this road to Damascus and he could have saved Huckabee!

Do Purim

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 21, 2008

Today is the Jewish holiday of Purim. (Unlike the biblically-based Jewish holidays, this is one, like Chanuka, during which I’m allowed to blog!)

As well explained in the Book of Esther, it’s the holiday of turnabout, surprises, false identities, intrigue, perhaps some emotional legerdemain, and not a little spiritual confusion. The outcome isn’t always funny, or even fun, except perhaps in the sense of the divine comedy.

It all comes around in the end, though!

The real culprits behind the meltdown

Posted by pennywit on March 18, 2008

This morning, a colleague of mine forwarded me the documentation for the mortgage-backed securities that Bear Stearns held.  After rifling through the papers, I found out why they ran into trouble.

Turns out that they held securities for mortgages on Whiteacre, Blackacre, Yellowacre, Redacre and Blueacre.  As any law student or graduate knows, owning those properties is a recipe for trouble.
