Two-bit imperialism

Posted by Ron Coleman on December 5, 2007

I once fancied myself something of a neo-victorian. Perhaps there’s something to that. As Harvey says:

The venerable Archbishop of Canterbury has criticized America’s imperialism, saying that the United States wields its power in a way that is worse than Britain during its imperial heyday.

I find myself agreeing with him.

Me too. Read why.

Hitting below the Mason-Dixon line

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 27, 2007

Maybe Glenn Reynolds knows the answer to this one — isn’t Tennessee right next to Kentucky?:

What do you want from a school that claims on its website to be devoted to protecting rights through “human sacrifice”? Is human sacrifice legal in Kentucky?

Full, sad story here and here.  It’s not really so much to laugh that people will pay money for an unaccredited law degree — even people with accredited degrees from lower-ranked schools can usually look forward to a very non-legal, or very unsatisfying legal, career.  It is a crime that people’s money is being taken this way; it’s a bigger one, though, that students fork over this magnitude of money on purpose.

Quisling turkeys

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 22, 2007

James Lileks can’t stand them!

Eat them, not me! Can’t you tell by my posture and expression that I identify with you? I’m better than those stupid birds. They deserve to be eaten. Here – let me go get you some gravy. Later, I can whistle Mozart, if you like. I love Mozart, don’t you? All of us smart bipeds love Mozart! Those stupid birds couldn’t sing two bars of “Turkey in the Straw.” Me, I’m not fond of the tune – it’s a little simple, don’t you think? Of course, if you appreciate folk music as an expression of the people – there was an article in Life magazine about that last week, did you read it? – then I suppose it has its place, but frankly I just think turkey culture is just too low, too base – yes yes, I’ll shut up, of course! Anything you say. Shut up it is.

Conference room days

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 21, 2007

Glenn Reynolds got me all excited for nothing:

ANOTHER HOLLYWOOD SUICIDE BOMB: Wagner James Au emails: Not sure anyone’s pointed this out yet, but *Redacted* was a giant bomb, I mean just disastrous in relation to profile, ranking *50th* place in last weekend’s box office receipts.

Here I thought I was finally going to go see a movie, but “Redacted,” it turns out, is not what I thought it was. No, it’s another pro-surrender movie and it’s tanking. That’s fine, but I was hoping — from the title, you know? — that it was a movie about document production in a big law firm, as I wrote about in my never-written book, Boiling the Ocean (pdf). I was even going to go out and buy a new REDACTED stamp and everything — just to relive old times.

I can’t understand why no one makes movies like that!

UPDATE:  Contrary to some suggestions to the contrary in the comments, it appears that it may be a lot worse — not a lot better — for “Redacted” than initial reports suggested.

Those who can’t, coach

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 15, 2007

ABC News has this story (yes, Glenn again) about three grateful recipients of Bill Clinton pardons who, not surpisingly, want to show some gratitude — and the best way to do that right now is to give money to his co-president in her current campaign for the Top Banana role.

This does not move me that much.

I was, however, struck by this piece of the story:

One of the pardonees who has become a donor to Sen. Clinton is David Herdlinger, aherdlinger.jpg former prosecutor in Springdale, Ark., who, according to press accounts at the time of his pardon pleaded guilty in 1986 to mail fraud after taking bribes to reduce or drop charges against defendants charged with drunken driving offenses.

Now a life and business coach in Georgia, Herdlinger was pardoned by President Clinton in January 2001; he donated $1,000 to Sen. Clinton’s presidential campaign in August.

A disbarred lawyer who “pleaded guilty in 1986 to mail fraud after taking bribes to reduce or drop charges against defendants charged with drunken driving offenses” — a life coach? What a country!

Toying with us

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 14, 2007

The consumer-watch-out-or-else people have put out their list of death toys. I had to laugh (darkly) when I read this excerpt:

Joan Lawrence of the Toy Industry Association questioned the usefulness of WATCH’s list, saying such lists often lack context about who the toy is aimed at and how it should be used.

For instance, “Jack Sparrow’s Spinning Dagger,” a toy from the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie trilogy, clearly isn’t right for small children, but is fine for older kids, Lawrence said.

“In general, the products are safe as intended to be used,” she said.

Like any American my age, I was instantly reminded of old Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys:

Consumer Reporter: Good evening, and welcome to the holiday edition of “Consumer Probe”. Our topic tonight is unsafe toys for children. For instance, this little bow and arrow set. [ holds up ] Pull the rubber suctions off, and the arrows become deadly missiles.

irwin-mainway.jpgWe have with us tonight, Mr. Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys. Uh, Mr. Mainway, your company manufactures the following so-called harmless playthings: Pretty Peggy Ear-Piercing Set, Mr. Skin-Grafter, General Tron’s Secret Police Confession Kit, and Doggie Dentist. And what about this innocent rubber doll, which you market under the name Johnny Switchblade? [ holds up doll ] Press his head, and two sharp knives spring from his arms. [ demonstrates ] Mr. Mainway, I’m afraid this is, by no means, a very safe toy.

Irwin Mainway: Okay, Miss, I wanna correct you, alright. The full name of this product, as it appears in stores all over the county, is Johnny Switchblade: Adventure Punk. I mean, nothing goes wrong.. little girls buy ’em, you know, they play games, they make up stories, nobody gets hurt. I mean, so Barbie takes a knife once in a while, or Ken gets cut. You know, there’s no harm in that. I mean, as far as I can see, you know?

Consumer Reporter: Alright. Fine. Fine. Well, we’d like to show you another one of Mr. Mainway’s products. It retails for $1.98, and it’s called Bag O’ Glass. . . .

Interesting possibilities

Posted by Ron Coleman on November 7, 2007

freakingnewscom-chimera.jpgInstapundit quotes Senator former President Hillary Clinton: “The federal government should be making immigration policy and that’s what I’m going to try to do as president again.”

Hmm. Well, then, now that we’re being all out front about this, is it time to deploy the 22nd Amendment?
