Trendy my foot

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 29, 2007

I feel as if I practically grew up in the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan, having spent most of my life slipping back and forth across the Hudson River by bus for one reason or another.

Now they have a series of ads all over the terminal, trying to convince people that “the Port Authority” is somehow something more than a bus terminal — which, although it is an immensely more pleasant bus terminal today than it was 25 years ago, and even ten or five years ago, it most assuredly is not. Each sign features a different merchant in the terminal. The idea is to simulate a fancy shopping mall that just happens to smell like diesel fumes.

This one I see every night, because it’s right near my gate. It’s a pitch for Strawberry Stores which, I gather, one can enjoy in places other than the PA. So here’s the ad pitch:

Isn’t it nice to hear the word ‘trendy’ used around here?

It is to laugh! I have, of course, never heard the word trendy used around there. I have, of course, never heard the word trendy used in association with Strawberry Stores anywhere! And, of course, if I did hear the word “trendy” “used” around here, it wouldn’t make my bus come any sooner, or be anywhere closer to the temperature it ought to be, or make the bathrooms any less creepy, or have any effect whatsoever on the charming nightlife — a holdover from the 1970’s, when Times Square was the scariest place in New York — that hovers around the Ralph Kramden statue at the front entrance of the terminal after it gets dark.

And, of course, the Asian card. You know it’s trendy because the smiling fashion girl is Asian.

What was that announcement? Lincoln Tunnel still backed up outbound?

Sigh.

Atheism ascendant

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 29, 2007

Roland Dodds posted this weird, retro propaganda clip from the silly ol’ Red Scare days.  It shows the new commissar of, I don’t know, Anytown, USA, trying to debrief a classroom full of wide-eyed Christian children on the topic of how their deity answers prayers.  As Roland writes, “This great piece of Cold War propaganda would be hilariously bad if it wasn’t technically true.”

Indeed.  The fact is, this level of argumentation is about what you get from the “Flying Spaghetti Monster” set anyway.  They aren’t commies, at least not all of them, but they can be about that creepy in a certain sense — and no more logically compelling.

Schadenfreude — the good kind

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 29, 2007

Taking joy in the downfall of others is okay when they’re bad guys. Infamy or Praise tells a funny story about a crook who gets caught by leaving too many voice recordings connected to his crimes:hamburglar.jpg

Here’s another tip for thieves: don’t use your regular phone number for all of your crimes. Get a business line or something.

Plus, consider the “unlisted” option. Or at least wear one of those burglar masks while you’re on the phone.

Trust us, we’re from the government

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 28, 2007

destruction-full.jpgIf the government can do for health care what it’s done in California for firefighting — acknowledged by even the meanest libertarian / free-marketer as a core mission of any government — then be very afraid of the Hillary Clinton Administration. And eat a lot of apples.

More (updated):

“We are overwhelmed with bureaucratic regulations and the [fire] spotters are the best example of that,” said U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach. “In a time of crisis, the rules did not serve our country well … the bureaucrats lost picture of what their mission is, to protect the citizens.”

We’re speaking here about what are essentially the best providers of government services there are, namely emergency and military personnel. Now imagine adding that level of bureaucratic fat, lack of accountability and lack of incentive to an already awful, unresponsive health care system, already hopelessly distorted as a result of years of government tinkering, regulation and “free money.” Or have you never been to a hospital — especially a public hospital?

True, the emergency in the California fires was acute, and massive, whereas when a single citizen needs immediate medical attention it’s only acute — and personal. On the other hand, there appear to be fewer than a dozen human casualties of the fires. Don’t expect body counts that low when Hillarycare comes to your town.

Tough Turkey

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 28, 2007

Turkey has that Oriental swagger:

Turkey’s top military commander promised Saturday to make Iraq-based Kurdish rebels “grieve with an intensity that they cannot imagine” . . .

Can you imagine a “Western” country’s military leadership phrasing a threat that way? Say, one of ours? There would be Congressional hearings within the week, outraged editorials in the New York Times, and, probably, no grieving rebels.

Not that this means there will be any. Turkey hasn’t really shaken anyone up in about a hundred years. And, I don’t know, a lot of really good military powers have found Iraq… somewhat dicey, shall we say? … especially in the “insurgent” department.

But perhaps when dealing with this sort of enemy, there is something to be said for “mother of all battles”-type fighting words. Isn’t there?

These spots don’t change

Kaus:

I’m continually amazed by the Cheap Date Conservatives I run into who think McCain has somehow convincingly changed on immigration.

I haven’t run into any.  Maybe Mickey Kaus only runs into Cheap Date Conservatives because those are the kind of conservatives he runs into.  Follow me?

GOP horse race at the conservative blogs

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 26, 2007

Fred #1, Rudy #2 — a better showing by Giuliani among right wing bloggers than a lot of other right wing bloggers were expecting, I think.

But, not unexpectedly, “strong negatives.”  A lot of that going around… wonder why?

The ultimate penalty

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 26, 2007

Sometimes, justice demands nothing less than the ultimate penalty. In Texas, they have determined one of those times.

That is justice, not “vengeance.” The concept of punishment is largely lost on our soft-minded (forget the heart already) society. Punishment is an aspect of justice, and is both separate from prevention and unrelated to remediation. It is the lack of a sense and understanding of justice that a society becomes lawless — that crimes like the ones described at the link become conceivable.

William Jefferson Clinton, former President of the United States

Posted by Ron Coleman on October 25, 2007

Instapundit links to an item that ran on Drudge earlier today, but I got all tied up trying to embed it here (couldn’t do it): A video of Bill Clinton at a speaking event, answering a question from a Truther who asks about 9/11 being an “inside job.” The former President, making Jimmy Carter look like the abominable puissant that he is, is having none of it, and just says — his jaw set, his teeth gritted, and with genuine rage:

An inside job?

How dare you?

How dare you?

End of discussion. And they carted the guy away.

It’s amazing that this manly, no-nonsense response is deserving of praise, but it is. I am deeply touched every time I watch this clip, and proud of his reaction. Notwithstanding the attack on Hillary Clinton coming from the far left, who knows whether more than a couple of deluded left-wingers will feel the cold water hitting their faces when they view this clip.
