Me, Senator Al Franken

Posted by Ron Coleman on May 11, 2009

Back when I was the new Yid in town, I knew great things, as well as awful things, might lay ahead.  But I never dreamed that the Al Franken Decade could actually occur.  And yet, it seems, that grisly reality begins now.

Senator Al Franken.  I preferred his earlier, funnier bits.  Ok… earlier.

Chicago Boy Mitch Townsend finds a silver lining, namely, that it could be worse:

Here is some encouraging news: “On April 29, 2008, Franken released a statement noting that he will pay about $70,000 in back income taxes in 17 states dating to 2003″ (link). Since Timothy Geithner had to pay only $34,000 in back taxes, Franken is about twice as qualified as Geithner to handle the fiscal affairs of our country.

Senate Appropriations Committee, here comes a fellow who knows which end of a calculator is up, if not much more. Maybe someone can teach him what those symbols on the buttons mean.

Stretching it, yes.  But one needs something to cling to in order to keep going on.

On the shore

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 17, 2009

The Sages teach that after the crossing of the “Red Sea” the Israelites watched the riches of Egypt, borne by their frenzied pursuers who now slept forever in the watery depths, wash up on the shore.  They gathered up this wealth before being urged by Moses, who had loftier things in mind, to turn their back on Egypt in every sense and continue forward on their journey to a new and greater destiny.  While the rabbinical sources do not by and large criticize the Israelites for taking belated payment for centuries of brutal servitude and oppression, it does seem clear that there is something about their inability to shake their attachment to the “fleshpots of Egypt” that remains problematic.

Well, I got back to my Egypt, not at Ramses or Pithom but on 34th Street, after the final two festival days of Passover, and after what was really two weeks consumed by comprable lofty ambitions.  And, well… let’s just say while it has all the earmarks of the above experience — drowning; “riches” strewn all about; spiritual confusion — I am, ultimately, still here, and on the correct side of the Sea, at least!

There’s plenty of sorting to do, and I don’t think I will get 40 years to do it.  But on the other hand, I remain hopeful that, unlike that particular group of my ancestors, I will get to personally enter the Promised Land…

Meat me halfway

Posted by Ron Coleman on April 13, 2009

Aaron Morris:

I’ve always considered vegetarianism to be an eating disorder in many. And while I haven’t yet convinced the American Psychiatric Association to include vegetarianism in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), I now have research to support that vegetarianism is a strong indicator of a possible eating disorder.

Stay with me and I’ll explain.

A recent dietary study was led by nutritionist Ramona Robinson-O’Brien, an assistant professor at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota. The study concluded that adolescent and young adult vegetarians were four times more likely than their meat-eating peers to binge eat and engage in extreme weight-control measures such as taking laxatives and forcing themselves to vomit. The study further concluded that teenage vegetarians as well as young experimenters — those who try it but abandon it — may be at higher risk for other eating disorders compared with their peers.

The study authors suggest that parents and doctors should be extra vigilant when teens suddenly become vegetarians. Although teens may say they’re trying to protect animals, they may actually be trying to camouflage some unhealthy eating behaviors.

It’s a little lean for my taste  — plenty of non-teens are vegetarians, and some of them are not nut cases, from what I can tell — but I like the cut of his argument.  Well done!

Chillin’

Instapundit:

SHOULD THE PRESIDENT BE working harder? I think he should take as much time off as he wants.

You have to click to see the great photo (duly licensed by Pajamas Media from Reuters via, it seems, the New York Times — who’d-a thunk!) of the POTUS having a public brew at a roundball game.

I agree with Glenn Reynolds. I have always found this petulant nonsense about how many vacations or much vacation the President takes — a favorite of BDS victims — really annoying. He’s the chief executive.

We’re not looking for another Jimmy Carter, up all night distributing the White House tennis court slots. Or anything for that matter. After all, the President’s already turning grey from the stress!

Our boy Madoff

Posted by Ron Coleman on March 9, 2009

The Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman finds something to smile about on Purim — someone who finally demolishes a Jewish stereotype:

“With his spectacular loss of billions of dollars,” he said, “Madoff has accomplished what billions of ADL press releases and full-page ads have somehow been unable to.

“It’s a shande for the goyim, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

I for one feel a lot less pressure now, that’s for sure.

Diagnosis confirmed

Posted by Ron Coleman on February 17, 2009

I’ve been saying for years how dangerous this is:

Paul Schipper, an avid skier who obsessively hit the slopes every day of the season for more than 24 years, has died. He was 85.

Cut down in the prime because he wouldn’t just sit down and read a book already.

When will people hear?

Rounding error

About those octuplets:

The surprising sixth boy and eighth child made Monday’s mass birth not just remarkable but historic.

“It is quite easy to miss a baby when you’re anticipating seven,” said Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine and one of 46 doctors, nurses and assistants who delivered the children by Caesarean section at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center. “Ultrasound doesn’t show you everything.”

Just five minutes after the first birth, the unexpected eighth baby came out at 10:48 a.m.

Well, there goes that. I mean, seven babies at a time is one thing, but eight — now that’s going to leave a mark.

It kind of reminds me of the old joke about the dowager at the luncheon club who needed smelling salts after their guest speaker from the university explained to the ladies all about the age of the solar system. When she came to, they asked her what had gotten her so upset. “Why, the professor’s lecture!” she said. “About the end of the world!”

“Madame,” he said gently, as the color began to return to her face. “You were so moved by my prediction that life on our planet would end in two billion years?”

“Two billion?!” she exclaimed, suddenly reenergized. “Oh my! No wonder! I’d thought you’d said two million!”
